This tour will introduce you to the rich history of Tome and Bainbridge using interactive elements such as videos, photos, and maps. As you will see throughout the rest of the online tour the original Tome School campus and its 188 acre property became not only a top educational institution, to many of the wealthy families of Maryland and the surrounding states, but it also became an integral part of the Naval Training Center at Bainbridge, when it was purchased by the US Navy after Pearl Harbor in addition to the surrounding area. Tome and Bainbridge have a deep historical connection which will be explored.

The area known as Bainbridge has a long and interesting heritage that reaches back to 1608, when Captain John Smith became the first European to set eyes on the cliff overlooking the Susquehanna River. The town of Port Deposit eventually grew beside the river, but the woods and fields on the cliff high above town were largely under developed . That began to change in 1901 when The Tome School for Boys opened in elegant buildings built of local granite on a 188- acre campus with dramatic views of both the river and bay. The beginning of WWII and the need to build a mighty Navy virtually transformed the area overnight when the school & surrounding acreage became home to the Bainbridge Naval Training Center. The virtual tour is an interactive journey through both Tome School & NTC Bainbridge honoring the history of both organizations, their long standing partnership in times of need, and the sacrifice of the many men and women who passed through its gates.
