Webmaster Welcome - Lessons from Wartime Objects
In an introduction to a riveting book titled “The Secret History of World War II – Spies, Codebreakers & Covert Operations” Kenneth Rendell of the Boston World War II Museum makes a point that the true stories of the objects of our everyday life hold secrets that largely are left untold. Espionage and intelligence are said to be solely responsible for winning World War II. Rendell displays many items on the pages of his introduction, including many things that one would not associate with covert operations. A porcelain tea cup, baby carriage and an Enigma machine – a modified typewriter, are not items that are immediately obvious, but those items told a story of the notorious and secretive work of extraordinary individuals who embarked on the journey of saving the world as we knew it then. Kenneth’s museum houses 57,500 digital and physical objects with their own unique wartime tales.
There are thousands of inanimate objects around us that will tell amazing stories if we listen. Listening to the stories of these objects gives us important perspective on times past, present and future. Kegan and Hyslop, authors of the WWII era tale, take its readers on an adventure of epic proportions, exposing the truth behind the untold history of the war time world. Randell’s admonishment to listen to the objects around us, rings true throughout the entire National Geographic feature book and should ring true in our lives.
As the web manager and archivist for USNTC Bainbridge Museum, I connected with this advice, and believe its sentiment. Bainbridge undoubtedly has objects from which listeners can hear incredible stories of faith, courage, and fierce patriotism. As we embark on our life’s journey, let us not forget to listen to the legacies foretold by the simple objects left behind. I hope that the digital and physical collections of the former Naval Training Center continue to inspire current and future generations.
Once every year we celebrate the history and heroism of those who served and the Port Deposit Community who supported them. I am incredibly excited for this year’s virtual event and invite you to discover the rich story of times long ago. We have many activities and items for you to enjoy, ranging from virtual tours of Port Deposit, Bainbridge Base and Museum, a concert by the US Navy Band, community vendors, and more. This organization, event and web system are remarkably close to my heart and I am fortunate that I am able to have an area to express my greatest passions. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy not only Bainbridge Day, but many days ahead, listening to the stories around you.Thank you for attending and supporting Bainbridge Museum.
