We are so excited that you have chosen to advance your passions and interests by offering an undergraduate course through our program! This site is designed to help you prepare for your time as a USIE Student Facilitator and also guide you through the information you need to successfully complete your time in the program.
Prior to the Fall quarter, please review the major deadlines and complete each item noted by the designated date.
During the academic year, it will be your responsibility to manage the preparatory work, including, but not limited to, enrolling in your pedagogy seminars, creating contract courses, and more. While the program culminates in the facilitation of your own course in the Spring, there is much to prepare before then. Please refer to the checklist page frequently to make sure you do not miss these important deadlines.
For additional questions, please contact Kara Brown, USIE Coordinator, at usie@college.ucla.edu.
Undergraduate Student Initiated Education (USIE) is an innovative program designed to provide a select group of juniors and seniors with the opportunity to develop and facilitate, under close faculty supervision, a lower division seminar for their peers.
The USIE Program was created in 2005-06 when a group of undergraduate students approached then Dean/Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Judith L. Smith, with a proposal for student-initiated courses.
As of Spring 2021, more than 150 students have designed and offered their own seminars, enrolling over 3500 undergraduates.
USIE is a program housed in the UCLA Honors Programs Office, A311 Murphy Hall.
