For thousands of years, cultures all around the world have practiced the ancient ritual of firewalking on coals and on lava flows for celebrations and rites of passage. Firewalks deconstruct old beliefs and expand the current range of possibilities. We move from the scope of “I can’t” to, at the minimum, a realm of “What if I can?” where the impossible becomes possible. Firewalking is the most extraordinary metaphor for mastering life’s obstacles. This last year of the pandemic has changed our world and our own personal vibration dramatically. Yet, life in general - our relationships with people, family, finances, professions, and many other issues - can cause us to feel stuck and vulnerable. Trapped in a perpetual state of alarm, it is difficult to access the creativity we need to see the pathways out of stagnation, out of the danger. That is the physiological reality of feeling unsafe - part of us shuts down so we can focus on sheer survival. Therefore, we must find ways to calm ourselves to access our higher, more imaginative functioning, and we need to stay alert enough to be assertive in the steps which will lead us to a future infused with more of the values of compassion, kindness, and ingenuity that we hold so dearly. A firewalk, and the empowerment workshop that precedes it, breaks through our deepest personal obstacles, those limits in our minds, and ushers us to a future of boundless opportunities.
No one is forced to firewalk, it is always a choice up until the first step, and that alone symbolizes the monumental power that the participant holds to take charge of their own life. Firewalking helps one to realize just how many aspects of life are actually in your control. This creates a sense of self-responsibility over the way you think, the manner of how strongly you react, the goals you create, and the path you choose to follow. Each firewalk evening, whether it is the first time or a multiple of the 50th, offers new insight of how to move forward from a difficult or unfulfilling history.
This special gathering, open to all genders, is focused on individuals who already are mindful of the power of healing through many modalities, and those of us who recognize our ancient heritage. Many of us are wounded healers, using our past and current challenges to fuel our need to teach, soothe, and improve the lives of others. Here, in a safe and encouraging environment, we face the heat together, drawing on each other while we build new ways forward in the midst of the fire. It’s important to know that while our challenges are uniquely individualized, we are not alone. A firewalk helps to feel connected, rejuvenated, and divinely alive, and to feel it in your body and your heart, not just in your head. Firewalking provides an unforgettable visual image to accompany our thoughts and beliefs. It reveals the vastness of human potential. Most importantly, it helps us to shift the energy of fear into empowerment. We were all taught that fire burns. When you have the experience of walking on brightly burning coals without being harmed, you re-evaluate other things that you have been taught and information that you have accepted or assimilated as truth. Therefore, if fire doesn’t burn, maybe getting older doesn’t mean getting slow, stiff, or weak. Maybe being ill or diagnosed with a serious condition doesn’t mean having to die or that we will be incapacitated. Maybe something that happened, or your inability to do something in the past, doesn’t reflect on your future. Maybe we are capable of much more than we originally believed. Maybe we can also speak with and hear those who have crossed the veil, in our own minds, and in the messages of others. Maybe we are more connected to each other, to our origins, and to the divine than we ever imagined.
This intensive workshop will explore personal obstacles and challenges, relationships, fears, goals, and empowerment techniques. There will be great laughter and typically, many tears. There will be boisterous cheering and a depth of emotional support. In just a few hours, you will be given all the guidance necessary should you choose to walk the fire at the end of the evening. Participation is voluntary – you are encouraged to walk, although it is not compulsory. All who attend will avail themselves of the healing properties of the fire. HOWEVER, no outside spectators are allowed at firewalks – NO EXCEPTIONS. This helps the group to feel safe and connected. Again, this will be open to all genders, so we will have a blend of masculine and feminine energies. This particular event has an adult-issue-focused program, therefore no children under 18 may attend so adults may speak openly and frankly without reserve. (Please contact Meddy directly to schedule a family friendly event for all aged participants!) Once again, it is not necessary for registered participants to commit to walking the coals in advance or to perform any activity in the workshop in order to fully participate and benefit, but everyone is required to remain supportive in the workshop space and follow directions to the firewalking area at the proper times. Firewalking is voluntary and your choice will be honored. Just remember, you are called to attend for a reason. Give yourself permission to take the steps necessary for profound transformation.
Rev. Meddy Jacques, mother, wife, anthropologist, author, lecturer, gardener, medium, and ordained Spiritualist minister, has been involved in firewalking since 2006. She became certified as a facilitator in 2016 through the Firewalking Institute of Research and Education (F.I.R.E). In March of 2020, she was privileged to be Fire Chief at the final firewalk event of the International Firewalking Reunion. In November of 2021, she began a two-year master training program, which will certify her to teach other individuals to attain facilitator status. Meddy leads her team of fire tenders, who are trained in all aspects of ceremonial fire building – from wood choice, site selection, fire formation, coal bed construction, to clean up - all in the safest manner possible. Meddy believes in the power of fire, in deconstructing limiting beliefs, in the healing aspects of community, and listening to the messages of our ancestors. Meddy teaches empowerment workshops, offers private firewalk ceremonies, group retreats, and team building, as well as many other services. In 2006, she opened Meddy’s Musings, a holistic center, which evolved into The Ushered Path, where she works with individuals and groups offering support, meditation, hypnotherapy, sessions and training of several healing modalities. Along with her husband, Jeff, she co-pastored Spark of Divinity Congregation, an interfaith religious organization, for 11 years. A gifted medium, Meddy is in touch with both sides of the veil and has been a guest speaker and presenter nationally and internationally. Her academic research has led her to archaeological work of Stonehenge, the cave paintings of the Dordogne region, and to begin learning Kanien’kehá (Mohawk) language to analyze lithic sites of the Great Lakes. Meddy does not merely dabble in any of her offerings. From her academic life pursuing a doctorate, and her certifications of master level in many modalities, she willingly shares her depth of education and experience with compassion and grace. Your safety and well-being are of the upmost importance to her, and it is her delight to watch her students break through incredible barriers. Meddy has tended and walked on fire hundreds of times and has personally experienced the miracles and powerful transformational effects of this ancient ritual. In her late 20s, she was told by medical professionals that she would be in a wheelchair by 35, yet Meddy joyfully ushers students over the coals as she enjoys her 50s. As a facilitator, her greatest pleasure is watching the fire awaken something deep within others and to see the renewed spark in their eyes.
