Major
The Operational Commander designs missions and sets objectives, defining the intent, scope, and success conditions of all operations. This role operates above the battlefield, determining what must be achieved while subordinate commanders decide how it is executed. The Operational Commander may adjust objectives or escalation as required but does not engage in tactical command, retaining final authority over mission direction and outcomes.
The Tactical Commander is responsible for the execution of missions in line with the objectives set by the Operational Commander. This role commands forces on the ground, translating intent into tactics, manoeuvre, and coordination between elements. The Tactical Commander exercises authority over squads and assets during the operation, making real-time decisions to adapt to contact while remaining within the defined mission scope and rules of engagement.
Captain
First Lieutenant
The Ground Force Executive Officer serves as second-in-command to the Tactical Commander and supports the command and control of all ground elements. This role focuses on coordination, continuity, and execution, ensuring orders are disseminated, elements remain synchronised, and the commander’s intent is maintained. The XO assumes command in the absence or incapacitation of the Tactical Commander and manages on-the-ground adjustments to keep the operation moving effectively.
The Ground Force 3IC serves as third-in-command under the Tactical Commander and acts as the primary Joint Terminal Attack Controller and air wing attaché. This role is responsible for coordinating, tasking, and deconflicting all air assets in support of ground operations, ensuring air power is employed safely and effectively in line with the Tactical Commander’s intent. The 3IC advises on air integration, manages close air support and ISR coordination, and assumes command authority in the absence of both the Tactical Commander and Ground Force XO.
Second Lieutenant
Wing Commander
The Air Wing Commander is responsible for the command, control, and employment of all air wing assets and pilots. This role oversees air mission planning, pilot tasking, and aviation standards, ensuring air operations are conducted safely and in support of ground objectives. The Air Wing Commander maintains authority over pilots and aircraft while coordinating with the Tactical Commander and JTAC to integrate air power effectively into the wider operation.
