Overview

Dear Colleague,

We would like to inform you of a key upcoming US-Japan binational research community Workshop on Programmable Networking to be held on November 16-18, 2020 (US dates). The workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) of Japan. The workshop will convene leading experts in network programming from each country, and will be held online.

The networking research community has increased its focus on data plane programmability – as enabled at transmission line rates through the relatively recent introduction of programmable layer 2/3 switches, programmable Network Interface Cards (NICs), and flexible physical layer transmission technologies such as software defined radios. These new approaches include changing the way packets are forwarded while in-transit, or adding probes or measurements to packets in-flight, or computing on packets at line rates to offload end systems. Active areas of research interest have included:

• the design of high-level languages and associated tool chains for specifying network behavior;

• automated methods and tools for validating both control and data plane operation;

• programmable data plane architectures, hardware platforms, software execution environments, and protocols;

• network applications addressing open problems in traffic engineering, measurement, and problem diagnosis;

• architectures exploring in-network compute and storage elements;

• techniques to assert network security properties such as access control and traffic isolation;

• physical layer programmability, including both optical and radio frequency channels; and

• programmable networking experimental testbeds, including federation, operations and internationalization.

The workshop will be organized primarily around lightning talks and breakout sessions to encourage brainstorming. Workshop findings will be reported to the community and to sponsors.

Submission Instructions:

Due to strong community interest in advancing programmable networking, we anticipate that workshop attendance will be quite limited. To ensure a balance of research perspectives at the event, we invite interested participants from both the US and Japan to please follow the instructions for prospective participants. Below we highlight key details about the submission format and deadlines.

  • Submit 1 page abstract summarizing your proposed workshop contribution using this online form.

  • Submission deadline: August 31, 2020

  • Acceptance Notification: September 15, 2020

Thank you very much for your interest and we hope you are able to participate in this important research community planning activity.

Best regards,

Organizers:

  • Jack Brassil, Princeton University, USA

  • Hiroaki Harai, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Japan
