The project is led by Prof. Upmanu Lall as the Principal Investigator, with Dr. Masahiko Haraguchi managing the research team and coordinating project activities.
Upmanu Lall is the Alan and Carol Silberstein Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University and Director of the Columbia Water Center. His research focuses on climate variability, water resources systems, and the development of data-driven approaches to understand and manage risks associated with water, climate, and infrastructure systems worldwide.
Masahiko Haraguchi is an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University. He manages the day-to-day coordination of the project, facilitating collaboration among team members and partners while contributing research on socio-environmental systems, environmental health, and the application of digital technologies to resilience and sustainability challenges.
Together, they guide the project’s scientific direction and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across institutions and countries.
Team Culture
Our team brings together researchers from diverse disciplines—including engineering, environmental science, geography, public health, and data science—to address complex socio-environmental challenges.
We emphasize collaboration, openness, and interdisciplinary exchange. Team members work closely across institutions and countries (Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore), combining different perspectives and expertise to develop innovative research approaches. We also value mentorship and the development of early-career researchers, creating an environment where ideas can be shared freely and new collaborations can emerge.
Through regular meetings, workshops, and international exchanges, our team aims to foster a supportive research community that advances both scientific understanding and practical solutions for resilient and sustainable societies.
