Have you ever tasted a banana? Do you know where banana's come from? They are usually grown in tropical countries such as Brazil and Costa Rica.
Watch the story and the slideshow about Diego's life. Do you think bananas would grow in your back garden?
After watching the slideshow, read the story on pg80 and answer the questions below.
Stone Soup is an old folk tale. It has many different versions in different countries but all the stories have the same moral.
Listen to the story carefully. Can you tell someone at home about the beginning, middle and end of the story? Do you think it is fact or fiction?
Listen again to the story and complete the activity of filling in the blanks on p 81. Have you heard of the Disney version? Here is a link to it if you want to watch it:
Can you remember the months of summer? Usually in the summer it is warmer than the other three seasons.
What is one of your favourite things about summer? Do you visit the beach? Watch the slide show about all the different things we can do in the summer.
It is very important in the summer to be safe in the sun. We can do this by wearing sun cream and our sun hats to protect our skin. What is your favourite thing about the summer? Fill in the answers on p 82.
What are your favourite types of fruits? Do you know where they come from?Keelings is the name of a family business that began on a farm in Dublin in 1896. They produce lots of different types of fruits on farms in Ireland.
Many of the fruits are produced in big greenhouses. Have you ever seen a greenhouse?
Listen to the story of how the Keelings family business has grown and changed over time.
Fill in the timeline of the different types of items that were grown on the farm on pg 78. Talk about the changes that have happened on the farm over time.
Do you know what the difference between fruit and vegetables is? How many fruits and vegetables can you name? Make a list and count them.
A vegetable is the root or leaf of a plant that you can eat. A fruit is grown on a tree or a bush and usually contains seeds.
Play the interactivity on pg. 79 to see if you can label the foods correctly. On pg. 79 write the correct word under the picture and don't forget to write what your favourite fruit or vegetable is. Why not do a survey with your family to find out which fruit and vegetables are the favourites in your house?
We have already learned that we need exercise to keep our bodies healthy. It is also very important to eat healthy food so that our body has fuel grow and develop.
Watch the slideshow and listen to how the food pyramid can help us to discover how many servings of each food we need every day. A balanced diet is very important to help our body to grow .
Eating healthy food and doing exercise is a way to help our bodies to grow big and strong. Fill in the blanks on pg.76 and draw a healthy dinner you would eat. What foods from the food pyramid can you add to it?
Have you ever been to a bakery? Can you imagine the smell of delicious bread cooking in the oven. A baker is a person who bakes bread each day.
Listen to the story about Shauna the baker. How is her day different to yours? Have you tasted some of the different types of bread that she bakes?
In Waterford we have a special type of bread that is only baked here. It is a Blaa. Have you ever tried this type of bread?
Answer the questions about Shauna the baker on pg. 77 and match the words to the pictures.
Can you remember our five senses? We learned about these back in September. We use our tongue to help us to taste different foods.

Read pg. 73 and discuss foods that have the five different flavours. Watch the slideshow and draw some examples of different tasting food in the boxes.
What is your favourite food? Do you know what country it comes from? Watch the slideshow about eight different foods from around the world.
Have you ever tried any of these foods? Watch the slideshow about the different foods and discuss the different ingredients in each dish.
Play the game and see if you can match the food to the flag of the country it comes from. Finally fill in the blanks on pg. 74.
Discuss with someone at home what you eat at different times of the day. Talk about all the different ways you can get different meals (cooking, a restaurant, a take away etc.)
Watch and listen to the story about what Rosie used to eat when she was young on pg 75.
Are there any similarities between what you eat and what Rosie used to eat at your age? Can you fill in the two menus on pg 75? Write a short account about Rosie's childhood on the farm.
Can you describe what the Gardaí do in our community? Listen and watch the video about the job of a Garda.
Pick Garda Alex or Garda Kate and fill in page 70 describing their uniform and different types of transport that the Gardaí use.
Write about whether you would like to become a Garda or not. Make sure to give reasons for your choice.
Read about and discuss with someone at home what you think air pollution is.

While you are watching try to listen out for some of the causes of air pollution. Also listen carefully for the ways in which air pollution can be reduced.
Complete the activities on pg 71
Listen to the story about how Sean travelled to school by clicking on the audio link on pg 72.
Now read the story about this also. Answer the questions on pg 72 using the story to help you to answer them.
Do you know anybody who got the train to school each day? How do you normally travel to school each day? Would you like to get he train each day to school? How many different ways could you travel to school?
A slope is formed when one end of a surface is elevated above the other end.
Read pg 68 and investigate if a slope affects how far a toy car can travel. Make a prediction before you complete the experiment.
Record your results and draw a picture of your experiment. Have you seen a slope before? Do you think slopes are useful?
Watch and listen to the slideshow about the history of trains.
Read about the history of trains on pg 69. Trains can be powered by diesel, electricity or steam. What are most trains in Ireland powered by?
Have you been on a train before? Did you enjoy the journey? Ask an older person about a journey they took on a train in the past an write about it.
A bridge is a structure which allows people and vehicles to cross over obstacles such as water or land.
Listen to the video on pg65 and discuss the four types of bridges.
With the help of an adult design and try to make your own bridge.
Watch and listen to the slideshow about the famous bridges in Ireland.
Can you think of any bridges near your house or in Waterford?
Research these bridges with somebody at home.
Read pg66 and fill in the blanks from the blue box as you go.
Examine the map on pg67. You will notice there are symbols and descriptions beside the map. This is called the key. The key will help you to see what the symbols on the map mean.
Discuss the map with somebody at home and answer the questions below the map.
Can you find where the two bridges are on the map?
Read and discuss page 61 with a family member. With the help of an adult create a rain gauge and record the results for the week.

Look at some of the interactive activities on page 64 of .Little Explorers' on the Edco website. Discuss some of the modes of transport in different parts of the world. Watch the slide show. Quiz a family member on the different forms of transport. Fill in the blanks on pg 64.
