Welcome back to week 6 everyone (I know - hard to believe!)
Let's keep going with percentages this week. due to the integration with factions and decimals There is so much to do with them so it deserves another week i'm sure you would agree :)
Firstly though, you won't believe it; I changed my mind and now have actually found the greatest joke ever:
we are going to concentrate on getting a % of a number and also do some work on increasing or decreasing an amount by a certain %
There is a more written work this week to challenge yourself on what you have learned. Please take it one step at a time and make sure you read the questions twice. Don't forget our ROSE strategy!
remember:
if we increase by a % we are finding the % and adding it to the original amount.
if we decrease by a % we are finding the % and subtracting it from the original amount.
to get a % of a number we:
make the % into a fraction
find the fraction of our number
add or subtract the answer we get to or from the original number depending on if we are increasing or decreasing
Example:
a dress costs €40 but in a sale is reduced by 20%. How much is the sale price?
€40 is our number that will change
It will reduce (decrease) by 20%
20% as a fraction is 20/100
"Divide by bottom, multiply by the top"
so...........
20/100 of 40 = 8
and........
40-8 = 32
The dress costs €32 in the sale
now it's your turn............
one more quick note: there are other ways to find a % of a number using decimals and multiplication or division and multiplication.
use what works for you and whoever might be helping you but remember in school in 5th class we try to start by finding what the % is as a fraction and then using our knowledge of fractions.
remember how i said there are different ways????
well. now that you've finished the questions check out these videos that go through some of the other ways you convert mentally.
the more practice the better. make up your own sums and see how you get on.
