The original lighthouse built at the mouth of the Connecticut River was a 35-foot wooden tower that was built in 1803. Throughout the years the lighthouse would be rebuilt and refurbished until it was electrified in 1955 and then automated in 1978. In 1966 the Coast Guard would create a house on the property which nowadays is occasionally used as housing. Lynde Point Lighthouse also gained the nickname “Inner Light” as it sits near the more well known Breakwater Light (“Outer Light”). Overall, while Breakwater Light typically shares a greater recognition (for being postcard-perfect), it shouldn’t overshadow the history and evolution of its equally interesting counterpart Lynde Point Light.
