Baltic Mill

Location: Sprague, Connecticut

Created in 1854 by William Sprague III, a former governor and US Senator, Baltic Mill was situated along the Shetucket River. At its peak, 1,000 employees operated 1,750 looms and 70,000 spindles to produce cotton. In 1877 a fire destroyed part of the interior of the mill, this mixed with debt would end the Sprague business. The mill would remain a spot for manufacturing businesses, but frequently change owners and purposes, never returning to its prosperous state. Fires would also occur in 1999, and more recently in 2018. The site and the town of Sprague, CT is now on the National Register of Historic Places, and while sections of the building remain, the majority of the former mill has been torn down.
