Opened in 1876 the Connecticut Valley Hospital would be used to treat the mentally insane of Connecticut. Rooted around ideas of social reform and humane treatment this institution would be pioneered by the great Dorthea Dix. Located outside of the city of Middletown the facility sits on a hill: it hosts tennis and basketball courts and overlooks the Connecticut River and the city of Middletown. To this day the Connecticut Valley Hospital continues to have patients and when Fairfield Hills Hospital and Norwich State Hospital closed in the 1990s the Connecticut Valley Hospital would accept their patients. Certain buildings on the grounds of the psychiatric hospital have been abandoned for use, but remain as a look into the original architecture and design of the hospital from 1867.
