How can I create a screen capture?
A screen shot is an image of what you see on your screen.
On Windows
- Option 1: Use keyboard shortcuts
- With the window you want to capture open, and on top of all other windows, press the key combination Alt-PrtScn.
- Result: A picture of the current window is put into the clipboard.
- Open a new Microsoft Word document.
- From the Edit menu, select Paste, to paste the image into the Word document.
- Result: The picture appears the document.
- Option 2: Use the Snipping Tool
- 1. Click on Start or Windows Icon > Run > Type snipping

- 2. Click on Start or Windows Icon > Choose All Programs > Accessories > Snipping

On a Macintosh
- Use these keyboard shortcuts:
- To take a picture of the whole screen, press Command-Shift-3.
- To take a picture of part of the screen, press Command+Shift+4 and drag to select the area you want.
- If your want just a window and need to be precise press Command+Shift+4 just like you would for a selection, then hit the space bar. Your cursor will turn into a camera. From there just click on the window you want. It can even be covered by another window and it will only include the window you picked. This also works with the control key added if you want to past it directly into an application.
- Result: The picture that was captured will appear on your desktop as a .png (compressed image file type like jpeg) with the name "Picture 1" (with subsequent pictures being "Picture 2", "Picture 3", etc.)
- To send the screen shot to the Computing Service Desk, reply to this/their email message, leaving your ticket number in the subject line. Attach the picture to the email.
