Fern Tree Gully News.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Considerable dissatisfaction exists at Fern Tree Gully at the action of the railway authorities in taking away the Stationmaster at the Lower Gully and putting a woman in charge. The local people are suffering great inconvenience thereby owing to the fact that all goods have now to be taken to the Upper Gully, thus necessitating extra railway freight as well as extra cartage. In pursuance of this niggardly retrenchment policy it is stated that only one broom is placed at the disposal of both stations, and that Mr. Blazey at the Upper Gully has the use of same between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., and the lady at the Lower gully from. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is retrenchment with a vengeance.

Mr. E.C. Blazey, who for the past 5 1/2 years has held the position of station master at Fern Tree Gully, has been transferred to Middle Footscray. Mr. Blazey has proved himself an efficient officer, and has won considerable esteem by the ready assistance rendered by him to the settlers.

THE marriage of Mr. Ernest Blazey, who is about to be appointed Station-Master at Hastings, with Miss Emma Hood, daughter of Mr. N. Hood, of "Richmond Terrace," took place at the residence of the Rev. F.H. Browne, of Lennox-street, Richmond, on the 21st August. The bride and Miss Ferguson, who was in attendance, were becomingly attired, and Mr. W.R. Blazey supported the bridegroom. After the breakfast, which was held at the bridegroom's residence, Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills, Mr. and Mrs. Blazey left on their honeymoon trip to Sydney.

Mr. Ernest C. Blazey, superintendent of the goods service of the Victorian Railways, who died on January 3, was a native of Richmond and a brother of Mr. C. C. Blazey, the town clerk. Beginning as a boy porter many years ago at Richmond station, he applied himself enthusiastically and intelligently to the little things that came his way, and when the bigger things arrived he was ready for them. He became successively signalman, examiner, yards master and, eventually, superintendent of the whole of the goods traffic of Victoria, having climbed, by sheer merit and ability, from the lowest to the highest rung of the railway service. When it was decided to electrify the suburban railways, Mr. E. C. Blazey was sent around the world to observe the workings of similar systems in other countries and to acquire a knowledge that it was hoped would be advantageous and valuable when the electrification was completed here, and Mr. Blazey, as chief officer in charge of safe *working, would exercise complete authority. The trip abroad was not, however, beneficial to Mr. Blazey's health, and soon after his return he frequently suffered from illness. Off and on he had been bad for two years 'before the end came at the comparatively early age of 54 years. Mr. Blazey will be well remembered in sporting circles of this city. He probably was the best all-round junior cricketer the district ever had. A man of big physique, he wore a beard early in youth, and was a picturesque and popular figure at the batting crease. The crowd that formerly assembled at the matches for the Boyle and Scott's Cup loved to see "Ernie" Blazey at his best. He put force into nearly all his strokes and boundary hits and "sixers" came regularly from his bat. By reason of his departmental studies and the fact that in his youth he was infrequently at any place for a long period, he could only practise irregularly; but he was, nevertheless, invariably consistent. He won the batting average of the Boyle and Scott's Cup during the only occasion he ever played right through a season. Mr. Blazey was a big-hearted man, thoughtful in all things, and this State particularly, and our little world in general, is the loser by his passing. He was an uncle of Mr. Vernon Ransford, the Australian XI. cricketer, and brother of Mrs. A. Dines (Church-street) and Mrs. Latimer (Mentone).
