All sites are located along the tributaries of the Anacostia River

This site is accessible by a pull-off from Sligo Parkway, across the stream from Dale Drive Neighborhood park. Sample on the upstream side of the u-shaped pull-off, just upstream of the culvert and “settling pond”. Sample off the rocks near the Sewer/Powerline signage.

This site is located on the Sligo Creek tributary across the Sligo Creek Pkwy. There is a small parking lot for a few cars right next to this portion of the stream, and the monitoring site is right on the corner of the stream and an outflow point. The sampling site is about 100 feet downstream from the parking lot, down a sandy pathway.

This is site is located on the mainstem of Sligo Creek. It was chosen as a comparison to SC-1 where we often see high levels of bacteria from a CSO outfall. The site is sampled from the upstream side of the footbridge which crosses Sligo Creek north of Wayne Ave. To access the site, park on Schuyler Rd near the Croydon Manor apartments. As you approach the bridge, there is a small trail between wood posts and the trail sign.

Park at Sligo-Dennis Avenue Local Park, close to the playground. Walk across the greenspace towards the creek, aiming for the large break in the trees. You will find a sandy beach area with two rock “bridges” crossing the creek, with the trail on the far side. Sample off the upstream rock bridge, just downstream of a large MS4 culvert. Aim to sample mid-creek where stream flow is highest.

LB-1 is returning to its original location for 2025, following the conclusion of bridge construction at Clayborn Ave and streambank restoration. Parking is suggested on either Clayborn Ave. or Barron Ct. Sampling will take place downstream of the pedestrian bridge, off the Long Branch trail. Follow the trail down to the gravel flats near the stream, just below the outfall and be sure to sample from a moving section of the stream.

Park on the street near the intersection of Glenside Dr. and Merwoodnear Dr., then follow the path across from Merwood towards the creek. You will access the creek just upstream of the playground swings, near a small sandy beach. Sample on the north side of the beach, off the rocks on the upstream side.

This site is located just south of where the Northwest Branch flows under Colesville Rd. Park in the lot for the Burnt Mills East Special Park and walk to the trailhead. Take a left to follow the trail that leads down to the water. After walking over a very large flat boulder, there is a clearing on the right with access to the water.

Park at the end of Lamberton Drive, just after it intersects with Claybrook. You will walk down the access trail that starts right where the road ends, and follow that path until it intersects with the Northwest Branch trail. Where the two trails meet, you will find a large rocky sandbar. Cross the sandbar to sample at the furthest edge of the sandbar, where the creek is deepest and swiftest moving.

Bladensburg Waterfront Park is a major recreational access point with easy parking, a water fountain, and a restroom available for volunteers. The site is located just downstream of the confluence of the Northeast and Northwest Branches, near the Ropewalk Pavillion. Sampling will take place at the end of the second dock right next to the lower parking lot.

The Quincy Run sampling is adjacent to Bladensburg Waterfront park. Park at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, and then walk on the Anacostia River Trail downstream behind the Washington Rowing School. After 30m, the path splits. Turn right, then immediately look to the left for the end of the fencing towards the stream. Approach the stream to the right of the fencing and make your way down the short dirt path down to the water: note this is steep so use caution, especially when wet.

This site is located where Beaver Rd. crosses over Lower Beaverdam Creek. Park at Viking Enterprise Demolition, and follow the overgrown path near the creek signage down toward the water. Sample just upstream of the bridge, wading into the concrete pad under the bridge water if necessary to read moving water. The site is also somewhat accessible from Metro's orange line with just over a mile walk from the metro to the sampling point.

This site is located behind the Calvert Road Park Playground. Walk 100m upstream of the parking lot, away from the Campus Drive bridge. Follow the rock “steps” down toward the water and sample along the bank.

Park at Lane Manor Park (7601 West Park Dr), behind the basketball courts. From there, cross either of the two bridges to the far rocky bank. Scramble down the bank and sample off the rocks, halfway between the two bridges, trying to get towards mid-stream where water flows the fastest.

This site is at 38th Ave Neighborhood park, near the playground & exercise equipment. It is a known recreation and swimming spot. Walk up the path, just past the Tennis courts, before cutting towards the stream. Sample off the sandy beach (second sandy beach upstream of the bridge), just upstream of the rocks and downstream of the confluence.

Parking is available behind the Artemisia Building (8400 Baltimore Drive). From there, follow the paved path south along the stream, veering off the paved path and down toward the stream just before you reach the bridge. Here you will find a large rocky beach. Sample under the bridge, ensuring you are between the small tributaries entering Paint Branch from campus.

The floating dock at the National Arboretum is located directly on the main stem of the Anacostia. Entrances to the Arboretum open at 8AM and access to the floating dock is not open until 8:30AM. Park at the Asian Collections, follow the trail towards "China Valley" and walk all the way down to the river. Caution: the trail is steep in some places.

Hickey Run is a tributary to the Anacostia that runs through the National Arboretum, found near the intersection of Crabtree Rd. and Hickey Hill Rd. Entrances to the Arboretum open at 8AM. Sample on the downstream end of Crabtree Rd bridge or where there is safe and easy access to the stream.

AR-3 is located on the Kingman Island floating dock on Kingman Lake between Heritage Island and Kingman Island. Park near old RFK stadium or come up the Anacostia Riverwalk trail for access to the island. Entrance gates open at dawn. Sample from the upstream lower dock.

The Anacostia Park boat ramp is located directly adjacent to the Aquatic Resources Education Center and the Anacostia Park skating pavilion. Monitoring at this site will occur off the end of the dock. Parking is located in the parking lots right next to the dock and directly next to AREC and the skating pavilion.

Yards Park is located in the Navy Yard area of DC just outside the property boundary of the physical Navy Yard base. There is a public dock with river access located next to Yards Marina. This site is easily accessibly by bus lines and the Navy Yard Green Line Metro station. Street or garage parking can be found in the immediate area and Yards Marina has pay parking approximately 100ft from the public dock.

AR-6 is located just over South Capitol St next to Audi field. Sampling will take place off the upstream overlook to the left of the Henson Center, which is managed by Earth Conservation Corps. Parking is located at the Henson Center or on the street.

WB-1 is located at the Bandalong litter trap managed by Anacostia Riverkeeper, providing an easy visual marker, just a little way East of where 60th St NE intersects the trail. Sample downstream of the litter trap. This site has easy access to street parking on 60th St near the intersection with Clay St. as well as to Metro's orange line and the Marvin Gaye Park pedestrian and cyclist trail.

This site sits on Watts Branch as it flows through Kenilworth Park, just downstream of the USGS stream gauge. Sample just upstream of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail pedestrian footbridge that crosses over the stream. You can park on either Deanne Ave or Jay St NE.
