C1. Patterns and Relationships Unit

Introduction to Patterning Presentation (pdf)
Introduction to the grade 5 patterning unit. The food bank question can be done on whiteboards, and the pictures shown are examples of what students may come up with while they are working out the first part of the problem.
Shape Patterns Presentation (pdf)
This lesson discusses shape patterns. The activity can be done using linking cubes or counters, and helps students get a feel for creating patterns, and creating shape patterns.
Tables of Values Presentation (pdf)| Table of Values Presentation 2 (pdf):
Two versions of lessons on table of values - looking at patterns.
Graphing Patterns Presentation (pdf)
Lesson introducing how to graph patterns. This unit can be done after the geometry (transformations) unit, so concepts like plotting points on a grid using the x and y axis, and (x,y) coordinates are already familiar.
Graphing Patterns Additional: Additional material for graphing patterns that can be done collectively as a class.
Pattern Rules Presentation (pdf)
Once students are familiar with how patterns work, they can now be introduced to 'pattern rules', which simply allows them to summarize what they have been learning about patterns and how make them.
Predicting Patterns Presentation (pdf):
The final lesson in the unit is about predicting patterns. Once students are familiar with detecting patterns (including using pattern rules), they are now introduced to the concept of predicting a pattern given the first few terms. This activity is advised to be done as a class where each student or pairs of students work through the question on small whiteboards. It requires a little bit of trial and error before students start getting the hang it.

Plotting Points Slideshow (pdf)
This is an intro lesson for the grade 5 geometry unit. It involves introducing or reintroducing plotting points on a Cartesian grid.
This lesson follows the transition from plotting points on a grid, to translating them. It serves as a primer for introducing the next topic, which is translating shapes.
Translating Shapes Slideshow (pdf)
This lesson takes the previous lessons, and applies concepts of plotting points and translating them to translating entire shapes.
Point and Shape Translations Slideshow (pdf)
This lesson serves to consolidate the concept of translating a point and a shape on a Cartesian grid.
Shape Reflections Slideshow (pdf)
This lesson continues the unit by covering shape reflections.
This lesson covers diagonal reflections (to support the previous lesson that only covered horizontal and vertical reflections of shapes.
This lesson covers the final geometric transformation as included in the curriculum; shape rotations.
Transformations Review Slideshow (pdf)
This lesson reviews the 3 transformations covered in the unit - translation, reflection, and rotation.
