C4E Algorithm Bias Project Internships
2025-26
We invite applications for the C4E Algorithm Bias Internships at the Centre for Ethics, University of Toronto, during the 2025-26 academic year.
We are looking for outstanding fourth-year undergraduate students at the University of Toronto with research interests that align with the Algorithm Bias Project, hosted at the Centre for Ethics and co-directed by Karina Vold, William Paris, and Sergio Tenenbaum.
C4E Algorithm Bias interns enroll in ETH401H1Y (Seminar in Ethics), Algorithm Bias Section, a year-long half-credit course (0.5 FCE). This course meets bi-weekly, on Wednesdays at 2:00-5:00pm. This course is built around the Algorithm Bias seminar series that meets on Wednesdays 3:00-5:00pm. They will also receive a paid internship ($5000) with one of the non-academic partners of our project (TELUS and Chiefs of Ontario).
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a program in the University of Toronto and be entering fourth year (interpreted here to mean: have completed at least 14 FCE toward their degree by the end of the current term), and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Undergraduate interns are expected to have a strong background in one of the areas relevant to the project (such as Philosophy, Political Science, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Information Science, among others).
To apply, please submit the following materials (in a single PDF file):
A one-page document describing your interest in the internship
Your most recent transcript for all undergraduate work at the University of Toronto
A paper you have written, preferably broadly related to the project (for instance, on AI safety, Ethics and AI, Philosophy of Race, Discrimination and Bias, among many other potential topics), not longer than 2000 words.
We especially encourage applications from students who identify as Black and/or Indigenous.
Please submit your application materials in PDF format as one file, using the naming convention “LastnameFirstname_AB_2025.” Please send complete applications to Ellen Ough, Centre Administrator, ethics@utoronto.ca
Application Deadline: July 31, 2025
