History of the University of Saskatchewan Women's Softball
The University of Saskatchewan Women’s Softball Program was initiated by a long time softball builder, Ron Fisher in August of 2008. Ron describes the startup of the program as follows:,
"Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association (SASA) was asked to join the Western Canadian Collegiate Softball League (WCCSL) and decided in 2008 to put a team together to join the league. Ron Fisher, a long-standing member of the Saskatoon softball community, agreed to head up UofS Women's Softball. Due to the complexity of the WCCSL, the UofS Women's Softball program would be operated independent of SASA. Ron was successful in finding funding for the startup of the UofS Women's Softball Program from the following sponsors: Saskatoon Cooperatives (Gold), FUNN Motor Group (major sponsor), Super 8 Hotels, Budget Rent a Car, Al Anderson's Source for Sports, Boston Pizza, Saskatoon Fastprint, Werezak's Pharmacy, Saskatoon Airport Authority all joined in to support the new initiative. Although unsuccessful in his efforts, Ron worked tirelessly to appeal to the University of Saskatchewan to allow this team to proudly wear the name UofS Huskies.
Earl Woodside accepted the role as head coach and added Jon Equina as assistant coach. Kelly Boldt and Brian Shalovelo were added as part-time coaches. This coaching group, under Earl's leadership, would be responsible for the product on the field.
The UofS Women's Softball team was organized within a month (August 2008). In the first couple of weeks City Centre diamonds were booked for team tryouts, equipment purchased, uniforms ordered and season travel arrangements were made. Tryouts were organized for mid August where Earl and assistant coaches evaluated potential athletes. The first UofS Women's Softball Team was selected the third week of August, 2008 and was ready for the Opening Day on September long weekend in Red Deer, Alberta.
The ladies named the new UofS Women's Softball Team the UofS Saxons. In their first 2008 season the UofS Saxons went on to an undefeated season that concluded in Calgary on Thanksgiving weekend winning their first Canadian National Championship."
