In the Eugene and Springfield community we wish to give K-12 women and other underrepresented groups in STEM fields a positive experience with mathematics. We will also encourage these students to pursue higher education in fields that require advanced mathematics. In addition, we would like to build awareness for K-12 outreach opportunities within the U of O math department.
The K-12 committee involves themselves with local outreach opportunities that have to do with developing young women’s interest in STEM. This involves coordinating volunteers with the Science Center and Women in Graduate Sciences for events such as Pi Day, Eugene Math Days, and Girls’ Science Adventures. The committee chair(s) are responsible for maintaining contact with event organizers, delegating the organization of volunteers and communication of volunteer opportunities to the committee.

The K-12 Outreach committee will be teaming up with the Science Factory to run our 6th Annual Math Day in March 2019. In past years, the girls have spent time engaging with activities that explored cryptography, the Mobius strip, Nim, Towers of Hanoi, minimal surfaces, and much more.
