Travel Behavior & The Use of Public Space
Why are American downtowns basically big parking lots?
Morning
Travel Behavior Interviews & Parking Counts (Koepelkerk, Arnhem) (51.982641, 5.907552)
9:30-12:00
Meet on the south side of the Koepelkerk in Arnhem.
Travel Behavior Interviews (Arnhem)
9:30-11:30
Interview three locals to understand their travel behavior. Find out how normal Dutch people get around. Ask:
Do you commute to school or work on a daily basis?
What modes do you use on your typical commute?
Why do you use the modes that you use?
How long does it take?
Are you happy with your transportation options (or lack thereof)? Do you wish it was easier to drive?
Is commuting a social activity or solitary?
If you walk or bike, do you do it for health reasons? How do you deal with bad weather? Do you have a shower at your final destination?
Parking Counts (Arnhem)
9:30-11:30
In the 12-acre area in the map below (including the roads on the borders), count the number of:
Parked cars and parking spots
Bikes
Cafe tables
Store fronts
Count the number of car parking spaces in the 12-acre area of downtown ABQ. Which is more vibrant? How does that impact the variables that we are concerned with (safety, health, economy, social)?
Recap (Arnhem)
11:30-12:00
Meet back at the koepelkerk with the group to recap.
Afternoon
Netherlands Open Air Museum (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum) (Arnhem) (52.009998, 5.905736)
1:30-5:00
Take the afternoon to walk around the Open Air Museum and learn about the history of Dutch culture. Consider the buildings and land uses in the context of what we've discussed so far in the course and provide a write-up in your notebook. You can also use this time to work on your Dutch scavenger hunt.
