What was involved
The Biomedical raMP honors experience involved gaining exposure towards biomedical research through working with a mentor at UC Health or CCHMC for one whole semester. We had several zoom meetings as part of the experience where we would not only share the research we had been participating in but also hear a variety of guest speakers.
What I learned from the experience
Through raMP I learned many things, but the most significant takeaways would be 1. Learning how to think like a researcher and 2. How to formulate research as a narrative. To expand, researchers often produce results that may not support what they had in mind, but there is also a reason for every result. Sometimes it may be easy to come to easy conclusions when there are other plot elements to this story which is being overlooked. In addition, the way research is presented can make a difference in how it is received by an audience. By presenting it intentionally and in a relevant chronogical order, much like telling a story, it will enhance the narrative.
How it impacted my life
First and foremost, this was my first official research experience and allowed me to explore what exactly it means to be a scientist, an idea that was previously roughly pictured in my mind. Furthermore, the experience allows me to decide if going into research is right for me, or if I prefer the strictly clinical experience of a physician. I find research very interesting, but I have yet to decide if it oversteps my love of clinical work.
