Unity Mission Trust obtains funding from caring and discerning people who identify with and support the grass-root-level work of the Trust. Funds are raised for specific projects that we plan through the year. This includes the organisation of local fundraising initiatives such as sing-alongs, art exhibitions and art auctions. It must be noted at this juncture, that we do not allow funds to be collected or obtained in any way from our youth leaders. All donations made to us, are external and from non-governmental and non-political sources.
UMT is an entirely voluntary organisation that does not have paid staff. As a result, administrative expenses are minimal and all funds received are used directly on financing various ongoing and future projects.
In certain instances, our Regional Teams also make the initiative to raise funds through simple donations made by well-wishers to carry out small-scale projects. This fundraising effort is tightly controlled and monitored, and requires mandatory reporting on the accounting of funds raised and used to our central headquarters.
All Regional Teams are mandatorily required to obtain prior approval before conducting any fundraising initiative. A simple project report is prepared at the conclusion of each project that documents project achievements, results and accounting matters.
UMT maintains a busy calander through the year, which keeps our Regional and Provincial teams fully engaged and proactive! Projects are planned over the year to cover at least 3 major residential programmes and a number of 1-day events at different locations across Sri Lanka. Our goal for the year is to cover as many different regions and provinces across Sri Lanka. Selected significant religious events such as Thaipongal, Deepavali, Ramadan, Hajj, Poson Poya, Vesak, Easter, and Christmas are also celebrated by UMT as National-level events at a selected locations that bring together our youth from across the island on an inter-faith basis.
In addition to the above, National events such as Independance Day on 4 February, and the UMT Anniversary on 29 October, are usually celebrated with a social care project by every regional team of UMT, which amounts to over 30 region-specific-projects that occur concurrently across different parts of the island.
In a nutshell, UMT organizes upto nearly a 100 projects a year in total, at both regional and national levels.
Yes, they can!
We warmly welcome volunteers with the proviso that they understand the vision, mission and objectives of UMT. Specifically, that we are not a social service organisation, or a social/activity club; rather, that we are a dedicated and focused non-profit trust aimed at building up young leaders who will foster unity, integration and peace-building between all of our communities to make a more successful Sri Lanka in the future.
National-level events are driven from our central headquarters based in Colombo and are led by our Co-Founders and a Central Command & Control Team. The organisational structure for this type of event consists of various sub-teams that work together to achieve project plan implementation. Each of our teams include youth leaders from different parts of Sri Lanka, and is delegated an area of responsibility.
Provincial or regional projects on the other hand, are driven by youth leaders from the respective province or region, and are supervised by our Co-Founders.
Each project, whether regional, provincial or national, begins with a project proposal that is then authorised and supervised by our Co-Founders.
The overall concept in running UMT projects, is to provide a hands-on experience of working in diverse, multi-ethnic, mixed-member teams, providing youth leaders with invaluable leadership experience through the various ongoing project activities of UMT.
