The crisis unfolds in the fictional country of Almazia, a multi-ethnic republic formerly part of the defunct Danubian Confederation. Almazia is bordered by Suderia to the west, and Elaran and Mirenia to the south. Following the breakup of the Danubian Confederation in the early 1990s, Almazia declared independence in 1994 and was internationally recognized in 1995. Despite early stability, latent ethnic, religious, and regional divisions gradually resurfaced.
In 2024, internal unrest escalated into a full-blown civil war between Almazian government forces and separatist militias representing the ethnic Rudari minority, concentrated in the western provinces of Dravana and Orvenia. The Rudari insurgency is politically and militarily supported by Suderia, a neighboring state sharing ethnic ties and a nationalist agenda, reminiscent of historic Suderian ambitions in the region.
