Membership in the National Honor Society is by invitation only.
Invitations are sent out via email around mid-September, every year, to each grade-level. These invitations are sent to the student's Union email as well as a connected message to parents.
Although you might have been a part of NJHS at Union Freshmen Academy, you are not automatically a member of NHS at UHS.
Students are required to have an unweighted GPA of 3.50, maintain this GPA throughout their high school years, as well as collect 30 volunteer hours, while paying yearly dues and signing the Code of Conduct to remain a member of NHS. Check out the membership page for all details and requirements (click here).
Students are invited to join their Sophomore year of HS, but can also join Junior or Senior year, if they meet the above qualifications.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: APRIL 30 @ 7:30 - 2024
WHAT IS IT? The induction ceremony is a special occasion to honor Sophomores being inducted into the National Honor Society. Students are recognized as they walk across the stage and receive a membership certificate for NHS, listen to guest speakers, and take the NHS pledge.
ARE ALL SOPHOMORES INVITED? Only Sophomores who have signed the code of conduct (now closed), paid dues (now closed), and logged 10 service hours (by March 14th) are invited to the Sophomore Induction Ceremony.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M INVITED? Invitations will be mailed to your household address listed in Canvas. This will be a physical paper invitation. In this invitation we will include information on how to RSVP for the event. We kindly ask that you RSVP by the date above or your name will be missing from the program.
WHERE: This event takes place at the UHS PAC each year, drinks, and desserts will be served. All friends and family are invited because they are so very proud of you! This event is as much as honor for them as it is for you.
DRESS CODE: There is no need for formal attire, however you should save your jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers for school.
Guidelines: You will be walking up steps and across the front of the stage in the auditorium. Stray away from sheer material, as the stage lights could make these see through. All clothing must follow school dress code rules.
Ideas for females: Dress in slacks, skirts or dresses. All clothing must follow school dress code rules. Dresses/skirts must not be shorter than your finger tips since you will be walking up stairs. No spaghetti straps.
Ideas for males: Dress neatly in nice pants (no jeans), if you'd like, add a belt and tuck in shirt tails. You could wear a button front dress shirt or polo style. Ties are optional. Some people like to wear suits (which is totally up to you and your family).
WHAT IF I DO NOT ATTEND BECAUSE...
I DO NOT WANT TO/CAN'T ATTEND ON THE DATE - Although we'd love to have you at the ceremony we understand that not everyone can attend due to various circumstances. The ceremony is not required for you to attend. If your family cannot make it, we encourage you to invite a teacher, or let us know and we will reach out to your teachers and invite them on your behalf. At Union, we believe each student is worthy of celebration and your Union family would love to attend for you.
WAS NOT A MEMBER OF NHS/TRANSFERRED IN, DIDN'T GET THE HOURS SOPHOMORE YEAR - That is perfectly fine. Welcome if you are new! The ceremony is not required for you to attend. As long as you have 30 hours by December 31st of your Senior year, maintain a 3.50, pay dues, and sign the Code of Conduct, you will graduate with official NHS regalia.
