Note for Beginners:
The beginner band course is created to introduce 6th grade students with little or no prior music experience to instrumental music. Students may choose to study flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, or percussion. This is a full year course and will take the place of any other specials electives. The 6th grade band will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.
Participation in the band program is extremely beneficial as students will engage daily in highly creative performances and activities that stimulate growth in areas of the human brain in ways no other discipline can. This growth effortlessly transfers into your student's academic life and will instill characteristics that prompt success and growth in and out of the field of music. Such characteristics include teamwork, responsibility, dedication, self-discipline, social skills, confidence, leadership and dependability. Participation in the Union County Band Program will provide a sense of pride, accomplishment and respect as the students develop musical and personal skills to enrich their lives. For more information, chek out the video below!
Students will be expected to work to maintain the high standard of excellence the program has portrayed in past years and will be required to practice a minimum of 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week to ensure their skills grow over time. This will be monitored through weekly practice logs as well as with in-class and online performance assessments.

In "Band Karate" students will chart their progress in the Standard of Excellence method book (Red Book) by testing for "Belts". Each belt represents a specific skill (or learning target) which we need to master in order to play more challenging and fun music.
Students will be able to test for each belt by choosing from the list of options given for each belt. To show proficiency and meet the expected skill growth UCMS Band students will have the chance to perform on Wednesday's to achieve their belt.
