The Bible documents Jesus' feeding of thousands, but the teaching was only to a chosen 12. Of the 12, there were only a handful that experienced the Transfiguration, and only one of the disciples dared to show their face at the crucifixion hill. Because so few were taught, and willing to be taught, Jesus graduated them from being disciples to Friends who had been revealed all.
Of course, the power-packed words of Jesus often left the disciples confused. Most of Jesus' concepts had been taught consistently to the first disciples in their synagogues, that Jesus could unlock the mystery of, then explain the meaning and application.
Unfortunately, the majority of us do not have that culture around us. In fact, the core of Christian teaching today has been so perverted over the past 2000 years, it lacks both the power and the appeal that the would-be apostles experienced and wrote about. Unteaching 2000 years of perversions and interpretations is not easy - especially in Christian cultures like the United States where Biblical illiteracy is at a record breaking high!
