History of the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s School of Medicine and IIMAS
The School of Medicine at UNAM (Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM) is one of the oldest and most prestigious faculties in Latin America, with origins tracing back to the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico founded in 1551. Reestablished as part of the modern National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the 20th century, the Faculty has played a vital role in shaping healthcare in Mexico. It combines rigorous academic training, advanced clinical practice, and a strong commitment to public health and biomedical research. With its flagship teaching hospital and deep integration with national healthcare systems, it continues to train generations of physicians and medical scientists.
The Instituto de Investigaciones en Matemáticas Aplicadas y en Sistemas (IIMAS), also part of UNAM, was founded in 1971 and has been a national leader in the development of computational sciences, applied mathematics, and systems engineering. IIMAS has become a cornerstone for interdisciplinary research, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, and computational modeling. Through its collaboration with faculties such as Medicine, IIMAS contributes cutting-edge technological tools and methodologies to address complex problems in health, industry, and society. The convergence of these institutions reflects UNAM's broader mission to integrate science and societal impact.
History of TU Braunschweig and its Connection with Hannover Medical School (MHH) and PLRI
Technische Universität Braunschweig (TUBS) is Germany’s oldest technical university, established in 1745. It has a longstanding reputation for innovation in engineering, computer science, and applied research. Over the decades, TU Braunschweig has built a strong ecosystem of partnerships with industry and academic institutions across the region and the world. A key part of this ecosystem is its collaboration with the Hannover Medical School (MHH), one of Germany's leading university hospitals, known for its clinical excellence and biomedical research.
The Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics (PLRI), a joint initiative between TUBS and MHH, embodies this collaboration. Named after one of the pioneers of medical informatics in Germany, PLRI is a hub for interdisciplinary work at the intersection of healthcare, AI, and digital transformation. The institute focuses on developing technologies to improve clinical decision-making, patient care, and healthcare systems. Through PLRI, TU Braunschweig bridges technical innovation with real-world medical applications, forming a strong foundation for international projects such as the Mexico-Germany Hybrid Summer School in Medical Informatics.
