Summer Enrichment programme

Summer Enrichment Programme offer students the opportunity to experience Malaysian culture as well as developing their English language skills, increasing self-confidence, and creating life-long friendships. We at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a variety of wonderful activities ranging from cultural events, field trips, homestay programme and outdoor adventures.

Past Summer enrichment programmes

SEPvrUM Japan, August 2021

SEPvrUM is back with a total of 45 participants from Japan, alongside with 23 i-Smart Buddies from members of Global Network Club. We hosted students from Kwansei Gakuin University, Tohoku University, Okayama University, and Osaka Prefecture University.

The 3 weeks programme had total of 5 courses: Speaking and Pronunciation, Reading and Vocabulary, Writing and Composition, Grammar Usage, and a plenary course, Malaysian Studies. We organised various activities throughout the programme that had strengthen the friendship between the i-Smart Buddies and the Japanese Buddies. Moreover, we also took our Japanese buddies to visit Malaysia through Virtual City Tours. Last but not least, we had a cultural exchange with the Japanese buddies so that we could learn about our similarities and celebrate our differences together, thus creating a strong bond of friendship with each other.

SoSHIP Japan, August 2021

This time around, The Social Sciences and Humanities Immersion Programme virtual mobility 2021 (SOSHIP) was joined by 6 participants from Tohoku University and University of Fukui, starting from the 9th of August to 27th of August 2021. The duration of 3 weeks might seem short, but it is long enough to form an unshakable bond among our amazing instructors, Japanese buddies as well as fellow i-smart buddies.

All participants managed to gain insightful knowledge from the offered courses such as Gender Studies, Film Studies, Media and Society, and Politics and International Relations as well as two other mandatory courses like Seminar Series and Malaysian Studies. Moreover, fun games sessions were played, and cultural info and experiences (Malaysia-Japan) were exchanged. Both Japanese participants and GNC’s i-smart buddies managed to achieve their desired goals in this programme to be a better version of themselves that is equipped with brilliant communication skills, increasing level of knowledge as well as an expansion of social networking. The memories created throughout the programme are precious and meaningful to everyone.

SEPvrUM Tottori University, March 2021

This time, the Global Network Club had hosted 17 students from Tottori University, Japan. Activities that we conducted together included five compulsory English classes, Malaysian studies, Cultural Exchange, and various fun evening activities and games. The song 'Wajah-wajah Sahabat' by Grey Sky Morning was chosen as the BGM to conclude our 1 week journey.

SoSHIP Japan, March 2021

The Social Sciences and Humanities Immersion Programme (SoSHIP) 2021 continued the virtual version of the programme where we received six participants from Japan which are from Okayama University, University of Fukui, and Tohoku University. The programme consists five courses with two of the courses are compulsory whereas the other three are the elective courses. The classes and activities were done online using various platform such as Google Meet, Zoom, Google Classroom, Line and WhatsApp Messenger.

SEPvrUM Japan, February 2021

Summer Enrichment Program Virtual UM returns again in February 2021, this time hosting participants from Kwansei Gakuin University, Okayama University and Tohoku University for a period of three weeks. Besides gaining more cultural knowledge and improving their English skills, many events such as the ASMR food session, Chicken Dance and Malaysian folk song singing allows participants to enjoy this program to the fullest extent.

SEPvrUM Thailand and Japan, 2020

For the first time ever, the Summer Enrichment Programme was conducted online, and promptly renamed as Summer Enrichment Programme Virtual UM (SEPvrUM). The programme comprised of online modules, which covered the core topics of intercultural communication, and conducted over virtual meeting platforms, such as Google Meet, Google Classroom, and Zoom.
