Cat sails with the Cumberland Sausages, having previously represented both Cambridge University and the Royal Thames Yacht Club. When she’s not trimming sails, she’s out umpiring — yep, one of those weirdos who actually enjoys bobbing around in the cold, waving flags, and blowing whistles. Rain, wind, or questionable protest calls — she’s there for the friends, the laughs, and the love of the sport.
Getting old rapidly, as my team racing was at UEA from 1972-75, only half a century ago. I did sail a Laser in the 80's and I do occasionally race a Topper. I have been Umpiring since it began, getting grandfathered in to the scheme. Used to run the school sailing base at Farmoor but I am now a man of leisure.
Steve was a mining engineer in South Africa in a previous life. His sailing pinnacle was as crew on Hobie 16 offshore Durban. Former Chairman Merlin Rockets. Former Commodore Midland SC. RYA Regional Rules Advisor Midlands
Freya started team racing at Southampton in 2019, and hasn't yet found a sport she likes better. Southampton Events Secretary 2022-2024, having had the joy of running the Wessex Winter Warmer in 2023 and 2024 in addition to helping out at as many different events as possible (and still trying to sail sometimes when she can).
Former Nottingham & Glasgow student, Iona is now studying a PhD so doesn't have to leave team racing. Joining committees to collect the alphabet (UoN, BUSA, SSS, JUC, UKTRA). Sailor-turned-umpire, more likely found with a penalty flag than a protest flag now
Fiona started team racing at Spinnaker with Southampton University and has been involved in the sport since then. She is probably better known now as Ben and Jamie’s mum, and as the Rutland team racing coach but also has won UKTRA and BUSA with Steve started team racing at both Burghfield and Rutland and produced the winning bid for the 2015 TR worlds, She has umpired and organised numerous team racing events as well as having coached various club, Uni, school and Worlds teams ( being older has it’s advantages)!
Before team racing She raced Lasers up at Ullswater and then alongside team racing raced 5000s, RS400s and Fireflies.
Her overriding aim is to drive grass roots participation in the sport. Be this by helping clubs get access to resources, or teams access to training; by encouraging parents and other members to get involved in running events; putting clubs in touch with each other; training sailors to be able to run and umpire events and above all giving a voice to the sailors and focusing on bringing down the costs. I’d like to see more sailors introduced to team racing before they go to Uni, and more events for those who graduate.
Longer term she would like to look at whether we can influence world sailing to make the team racing worlds back in 3 boat dinghies.
Before then she is just keen to work with the current committee with the goals they already have planned.
Alice comes from Rutland and team races with Rutland Raiders.

Ollie is a familiar face on the water and at the social, a former 29er National Champion. Southampton Team Racing Captain 2022-2023 leading Southampton Green to BUCS Silver in 2023, finished 11th at the Wilson 2023, 4th and top university team at UKTRA 2023.
