On August 6, 1945, Mr. Keizo Watahira, then one year and eight months old, was exposed to the
atomic bombing in Hiroshima, just two kilometers from the hypocenter. He lost his father in the
bombing, and his younger brother, born after the war, also passed away at the age of three. Carrying
such profound sorrow, he survived the difficult years after the war.
Later in life, Mr. Watahira developed health problems caused by internal radiation exposure and
applied to the government for official recognition as a sufferer of atomic bomb disease, but his
application was rejected. Refusing to let the matter rest, he joined the “No More Hibakusha Lawsuit”
as a plaintiff and continued the struggle. At the age of 70, he finally obtained official recognition as a
hibakusha.
Even today, Mr. Watahira continues his work for the relief of hibakusha and for the realization of a
world without nuclear weapons and war.
As the average age of hibakusha now exceeds 80, this is a precious opportunity to hear a survivor’s
testimony directly. We warmly invite you to join us in listening to his deep longing for peace and the
message he hopes to pass on to the next generation.
We look forward to your participation.
