As a young law student, Rihito Kimura joined an international work camp in the Philippines in 1959. There, he learned about the massacres committed by the Japanese military in the Philippines during World War II and encountered the deep wounds—both physical and emotional—that the villagers still carried.

Overwhelmed by the weight of what he had witnessed, he encountered a passage from the Bible. Rather than keeping his sense of repentance to himself, he chose to express it through action, devoting himself to the work at hand. Together with a Filipino friend, he vowed to do everything he could to ensure that such a tragic war would never happen again.

Out of this encounter came the song “If You’re Happy and You Know It” (“Shiawase Nara Te wo Tatakou”).

He went on to pioneer the field of bioethics, an interdisciplinary field of study and practice concerned with the dignity of life.

In this lecture, Kimura will share the journey through which he has woven together his personal experiences and academic research. At a time when wars continue around the world, we hope to explore together the “signs” of a peaceful world—across differences of nationality and background.

法律を学ぶ学生だった木村利人さんは、1959年、フィリピンでの国際ワーク・キャンプに参加します。そこで利人さんは、第二次世界大戦中に日本軍がフィリピンで行った虐殺の歴史と、村の人々が心身に負った深い傷に出会います。

その事実の重さに打ちひしがれた利人さんは、聖書の言葉と出会い、自分の中に生まれた謝罪の思いを、心の中にとどめておくのではなく、行動で示そうと労働に励みます。そして、二度と悲惨な戦争を起こさないために力を尽くすことを、フィリピン人の友人と誓います。

この出会いの中から、「幸せなら手をたたこう」の歌が生まれました。

その後、利人さんは、生命の尊厳について研究し、実践するための学際的な研究領域である「バイオエシックス」(生命倫理学)の分野を切り開いてきました。

今回の講演会では、利人さんに、個人的な経験と学問的な研究を結びつけながら歩んでこられた道のりを分かち合っていただきます。留学生も、地域にお住まいのみなさまも、立場や国籍を超えて、そして、戦争が続くこの世界の中で、平和な世界への「兆し」を、ご一緒に探究したいと思います。
