Laser Cutting
Updates (03/26)
FabLab Final Work Day for Semester Wrap Up, April 30th
LASER CUTTING STEPS
1. Download the Laser Template
Follow the instructions outlined in the template and make sure to properly organize your designs. Please reach out to our Discord Channel for questions regarding the process. A proctor or a Specialist will be available daily.
2. Need help with setting up your file?
If you need assistance, send your file to fablab1330@gmail.com to be reviewed by a proctor or lab specialist. Please Give atleast 24 hrs for some one to respond. You may also stop by the lab in person to get assitance however availability is not garenteed.
3. Reserve a Time Slot
Appointments are set up in 2 and 1 hour time slots. Students can reserve up to 4 hours a week for laser cutting. If extra time is needed, Same Day appointments can be scheduled in person when the lab is open.
Failure to cancel your appointment will count as a no show. Accruing No Shows will result in a limited ban from reserving time with equipment in the Fab Lab. Please see more information regarding the Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy on the FabLab Policy Page
4. Prepare for your reservation
Please wear a mask and cut down your material to the proper size prior to arriving for your appointment. You can learn more about the size of our laser cutter work areas here. Please review our tutorials videos if you are unsure on how to use the machine.
Things to bring:
UIC ID
Material
Prepared Illustrator file
Cutting Utensil (optional)
Blue Tape (optional) but necessary more often than not.
5. When you arrive
Present UIC ID to the front desk. Remember you must be authorized every semester to beable to utilize the facility.
You must be CUTTING within 5 minutes of the start of your session. If you do not start using your appointment within 5 minutes of its start time, you may lose your entire time slot to a student on the Waiting List (and it will count as a No-Show). This means you must have your file completed and your materials cut down prior to your start time, so it is a good idea to arrive 5 minutes before your time begins to make sure you are ready to begin on time.
You must monitor the laser cutter at all times during your appointment. You are not allowed to leave your laser job unattended while the machine is running
