Lord Kelvin said it best "If you don't measure it, you can't improve it." Lifestyle behaviors like physical activity, health diet, and sleep are major drivers of health and well-being. Yet, they are rarely measured or managed in our healthcare system. Our team is working with our clinical partners to implement lifestyle behavior screenings into the electronic medical record system and to evaluate the clinical utility of these measures.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends patients who are at risk for chronic diseases should be referred to evidence-based behavioral health counseling programs for support. Unfortunately, these programs are in short supply. Our team continues to refine our evidence based lifestyle behavior change intervention (Vitalis), deliver the program to local patients in need, and test the effectiveness of this intervention on targeted outcomes.
A major limitation preventing the full implementation of lifestyle behavior change counseling into healthcare is billing. Our team has begun exploring this issue with the intention of understanding whether lifestyle related billing codes are being reimbursed and whether patient's health status associates with healthcare usage and expenditures.
