February 2024
I had a lovely January off "in hibernation" and I am happy to be back with our students this month reviewing plant parts and studying seeds.
In February and early March, students reviewed plant parts, discussed and predicted what was inside a seed, counted and drew sunflower seeds, and made sunflower seed packets. When weather permitted students also began preparing the food garden for spring planting by pulling weeds, turning compost, and collecting "spiky balls" aka the seed pods from the liquid amber trees around the garden. When we return after spring break, we will move into our watershed unit as well as begin planting in the food garden.
Kindergartners discovered a few very heathly and large kale plants in their garden. We also identified borage, California poppy, and parsley. Mrs. Gage and Ms. Varner's class had a blast working to weed the beds to prepare for spring planting.
Our 2023/24 Ocean Guardian Project is an expansion of the habitat garden. It will extend behind the B and C wings and provide classrooms in those buildings outdoor space that may be used by teachers for outdoor reading, writing, or other activities.
This project is funded by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a plant grant from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.
University Elementary at La Fiesta has been recognized as an Ocean Guardian School for two years: 2021/22 and 2022/23. At the end of this school year, we will submit a project report and hopefully will earn our third year of Ocean Guardian Status.
