As a chapter, Alpha Omega Epsilon supports two philanthropies: UDance and FIRST Robotics.
UDance is a university-wide philanthropy that is a year-long effort to fundraise and raise awareness for childhood cancer. This culminates in a 12-hour dance marathon at the Bob Carpenter Center. The sole benefactor of UDance is The Andrew McDonough Be Positive Foundation. The Andrew McDonough Be Positive Foundation was founded by Joe McDonough in honor of his son Andrew who passed away at 14 Years old due to AML Leukemia. Money raised through UDance goes directly to families of children with cancer to financially assist them in many ways. The Be Positive Foundation is also a large financial supporter of childhood cancer research.
In the 2023-2024 school year, our Chapter raised a record $27,829 in total for the Be Positive Foundation!
One opportunity provided by The Be Positive Foundation is the chance to be paired with a Be Positive Hero. Our Be Positive Hero is named Sami and is 17 years old. She has an older sister named Marli, who loves soccer and is thinking about majoring in Engineering! Sami and Marli are both kind-hearted individuals who can bring light to any day. Sami loves Giraffes, Hot Wheels Cars (she has a collection of over 3,000!!), and Basketball. We've been able to spend time with Sami at Milburn Orchards, barbeues, and several other events as well as sent her holiday cards and goodies!
Our other philanthropy FIRST Robotics allows us to engage with the STEM community outside of UD to inspire younger generations to get involved in the STEM field. We act as role models for these young girls as well as a resource for any questions and curiosities they may have. In the fall of 2022, we were able to meet with Padua Academy's FIRST Robotics team and give their members a tour of UD's STEM buildings like DuPont and Brown Lab. With this foundation built, we are so excited for future events with their members!
