Service Learning Trips, also known as SLTs, are an opportunity to travel with doctors and learn about the humanitarian efforts that take place in Latin America. It’s a chance to experience what doctors can do to engage with less fortunate communities. During an SLT you will facilitate the execution of mobile clinics and help with a project day.
Attending an SLT provides you with the experience to learn directly from a doctor, as well as working hands-on with patients. You are given the opportunity to make connections with the people you are working with, as well as the ones you are treating. By the end of your week abroad you will obtain 40 hours of service.
Mobile clinics are stations set up by the students with the guidance of the doctors. The stations set up consist of: triage, education, general medicine, OB/GYN, and pharmacy. Some SLTs will offer: nutritionist and dentist.
During project day our chapter goes to a community to provide assistance in building and renovating roads or homes to improve living conditions. The point of the projects is to provide communities with the necessary tools to improve their own living conditions, with some help from the volunteers.
