Book Club & Reading List
We maintain a reading list of interesting articles vaguely centered around the theme of equity and inclusion. The intention behind this is to share news and ideas and to spark conversations among our members.
Materials can be found in this Google Drive Folder.
Colloquium Speaker Conversations
We schedule weekly casual meetings with colloquium speakers. They tend to be held at 11:30am on Thursdays in the Physics Conference Room (3051), but this can change depending on the speaker's availability. Subscribe to our mailing list for updates!
Free coffee and tea provided!
Colloquium Speaker Suggestions
We implemented a system for students to suggest colloquium speakers to invite. This has measurably improved the diversity of speakers featured in colloquia over the past year.
Inclusivity Seminar Series
We invite speakers from around campus to speak to our department on topics related to equity and inclusion. We plan to host these seminars quarterly, or more often depending on interest.
Inclusivity Seminar Speakers have included Dr. Rita Kohli (UCR School of Education and the Institute for Teachers of Color), Dr. Mariam Lam (Chief Diversity Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), and Dr. Anthony Muro Villa III (UCR School of Education)
Event Planning and Promotion
There is an abundance of social events hosted on UCR campus. We promote these events and gather members so no one has to show up alone. Some recurring quarterly events we attend include:
Grad Bash
GSA Stress Relief Fair
Students of Color Mixer
We also plan and host our own events. We organize a variety of social events open to all Physics undergrads, grads, and postdocs, as well as their friends. Recurring parties include:
Yearly Super SMASH party to welcome the incoming class and kick off the new academic year.
Quarterly theme parties.
Perhaps movie nights in the future...
Outreach
We are often invited by the department to speak with students visiting from neighboring schools and hold a Q&A each year with prospective graduate students. We have ideas for future outreach projects, such as organizing a CUWiP conference on our campus, tabling at conferences, and interacting with members of the community at FutureLink in Corona.
