"'Who are you as a reader?' is just as important as asking, 'what are you reading?'"
–Lupe (TEP Student)
Reading methods focuses on the theoretical principles and pedagogical strategies necessary for developing and maintaining a balanced, comprehensive literacy program for elementary aged children. The novice teachers will engage with students, other novice teachers, and teacher educators with reading and writing pedagogy in authentic teaching tasks including the planning, rehearsal, and enactment of instructional activities and the analysis of student work. This work will be split between the elementary classroom setting and a professional development space at the school site. As we observe, plan, rehearse, enact, and debrief reading and writing lessons that engage students in meaningful activities, the novice teachers are able to plan and practice key instructional routines and practices.
We will spend 1-2 sessions on each of the following instructional activities:
· Visual Text: What Do You Notice?
· Word Work
· Interactive Read Aloud (Fiction and Nonfiction)
· Conferencing (Reading and Writing)
· Small-Group Reading
· Close Reading
