This workshop will explore learner-centered strategies for evaluating student work, both at the level of individual writing assignments and across the arc of a writing-intensive course. We will discuss principles and guiding questions TAs and instructors can use to inform assessment methods for a wide variety of contexts. To generate ideas, graduate student instructors and lecturers from Writing Programs will share their experiences using alternative assessment methods including portfolio grading, contract grading, and ungrading. We will then open the session for active discussion among attendees about opportunities and challenges for applying these strategies in their own classes.
This syllabus from UCLA Writing Programs lecturers Tamar Christensen and Randy Fallows demonstrates a portfolio approach to grading. The references to "publishing" in the course schedule indicate days where the full class workshops select student essays. Randy writes of portfolio grading, "By giving students the opportunity to write multiple drafts, I can allow them to achieve a higher grade while still seeing if they have made substantial changes to their essays. This is more work for me but it does tend to ensure greater quality in their final drafts."
