No matter what type of fieldwork you are doing, there is training for you! Some trainings are offered through the university - some are even free - while others are 3rd party. Prices are subject to change but we provide estimates where available.
Oftentimes people doing fieldwork feel confident in their abilities from their past experiences, but training can help ensure you have a professional level of comfort and knowledge to safely lead fieldwork. We encourage you to explore these options and attain funding to take anything relevant. Some trainings are required. Others are highly recommended. All are worth your while!
When planning your project budget, be sure to include costs for these trainings! Reach out to training coordinators to find out how much total cost (lodging, food, training) will be.
Interactive workshop to discuss planning strategies to stay safe and get the most out of your trips to the field. Can be customized to the needs of your research group. Free for Davis students/labs.

Mental Health First Aid® focuses on recognizing the patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and appearance that show there might be a challenge in the workplace.
You will learn:
How to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge.
How to listen non-judgmentally and give reassurance to a person who may be experiencing a mental health challenge.
How to refer someone to appropriate professional support and services.
How to apply an action plan to non-crisis and crisis scenarios in the workplace.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis.

The Mental Health Gatekeeper Training Program consists of two separate 2-hour mental health trainings offered to UC Davis staff and faculty who work with students. These trainings are sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs. It is funded by the University of California Office of the President’s Equity in Mental Health Program.
Both trainings are evidenced-based trainings designed to help equip staff and faculty with skills and knowledge to comfortably and confidently speak to students about mental health concerns and help them identify campus mental health resources. They are referred to as "gatekeeper" trainings because faculty and staff are often in these positions in which they can be students' gateways to help.
The two trainings are: 1) Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) focused on psychiatric crises and (2) The Inquiring Mind focused on mental health promotion and early intervention.
