“I was born and raised in Vancouver, but was always drawn to the island, both because the strong sense of community as well as the access to nature. My elective at the Royal Jubilee Hospital only served to solidify my decision that the Vancouver Island program was the perfect fit for me. I am so happy to be a part of this close-knit program with a huge variety of clinical experiences, a CTU with high acuity and a wide diversity of cases, plenty of teaching and learning opportunities with keen and enthusiastic staff, all within a very collegial and supportive atmosphere.“
Victoria is an amazing place to live and work. I chose the UBC Victoria site because I wanted to be in a smaller program where I could get to know my fellow residents and staff well. Victoria offers a welcoming learning environment that prioritizes your educational goals. As Victoria is the main tertiary referral site for Vancouver Island, there is no shortage of interesting clinical opportunities. I also enjoy the opportunity to work in a longitudinal outpatient clinic where I gain exposure to aspects of general internal medicine not experienced in the inpatient environment. Vancouver Island is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise and another huge draw for the program. On weekends or post call days I may be found mountain biking, hiking along the ocean, or exploring in the snow in Strathcona. The Island lifestyle can't be beat and we look forward to welcoming you!"
"What is most remarkable about the Vancouver Island Internal Medicine program is the people, they have made being a part of this program a true pleasure. We have an amazing group of residents who are seemingly chosen for collegiality as much as competence. Our staff are all approachable and very engaged in teaching. Collectively, they have created a clinical teaching unit that has been repeatedly recognized by clerkship students as their favorite teaching rotation. As a smaller program with very few fellows, we get more time working directly with staff and by the end of R1, most residents know all of the internists as well as most of the subspecialist. Lastly, Vancouver Island is an amazing place to live with good weather, great restaurants, and an easy-going atmosphere."
"The Victoria IM program has been an amazing fit for me. Originally from Kamloops BC and having done medical school in Saskatchewan, I always dreamed of returning to Victoria, where I completed my undergrad. Not only is the city amazing with year-round outdoor activities and the best climate in Canada I would argue (with 1/3 the amount of rain as Vancouver), I can’t say enough good things about the program. I really love our small size and getting to know not only my co-residents but also residents in other programs, staff as well as allied health on a personal level. I have also really enjoy the longitudinal GIM clinic where we see new consults in an outpatient setting and are able to follow our own patients long-term. Overall if you want a small but extremely supportive program with an abundance of activities to do in your free time, I would highly recommend Victoria IM!"
"The Vancouver Island IM program is an incredible place to train. Co-residents, staff, and program admin are very supportive and clearly committed to our wellbeing and medical training. Victoria has many perks as a smaller site, with access to the resources of the larger UBC program. The acuity and cardiology seen on CTU offers good exposure to interesting medicine and the opportunity to learn alongside a very collegial group of residents, staff and sub-specialists. I consider myself very fortunate to be training here, and highly recommend the program!"
"I chose Victoria Internal Medicine because of the people. Throughout the long hours and tough times in residency, it’s important to have a strong backbone of friends and colleagues that you can rely on. The internal medicine group in Victoria is so welcoming and fosters a fantastic culture, and I am so happy to be a member of the team."
