The Arizona Law Benchmates: Mentorship Program is an initiative designed to support incoming first-year law students as they begin their legal education at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. The program connects incoming 1Ls with experienced second- and third-year law students who can provide guidance, answer questions, and help ease the transition into law school.
Mentors and mentees are thoughtfully paired based on factors such as personal background, professional interests, career goals, and other shared experiences. Through these connections, incoming students gain practical insights into law school, academic success, student involvement, professional development opportunities, and how to navigate the day-to-day challenges of the first year.
The program is intentionally designed to be flexible and low-commitment. Mentors serve as a resource and point of contact for their assigned mentee, offering advice, encouragement, and support as needed. Communication frequency and format are determined by each mentor-mentee pair, allowing relationships to develop naturally based on individual needs and preferences.
For incoming students, the Benchmates Program offers an opportunity to connect with a knowledgeable upperclassman before and during the first year of law school. For mentors, it offers a meaningful way to give back to the Arizona Law community, share valuable experiences, and help new students feel welcomed and supported.
Whether answering a quick question about classes, offering insight into student organizations, or simply serving as a friendly and approachable resource, Benchmates mentors play an important role in helping incoming students navigate the transition to law school with confidence.
We encourage all interested upper-level students to participate and help foster a welcoming, collaborative, and supportive Arizona Law community.
