I joined Camp Fire Alaska as one of its Rural Program Logistical Staff in 2021. I assisted with the planning and logistics of the Rural Program and its assembly and shipping process. This was my first job where I was handed a lot of responsibility and this was a huge opportunity for my professional development.
Major Accomplishment: The staff and I served 27 rural communities across Alaska by processing and shipping 99,849 camp activity kits, 36,116 meals, and 8,533 pounds of produce.
The internship involved working with an assigned assembly member with a project they were working on. My specific project was evaluating a proposed ordinance by the Mayor of Anchorage, that would have amended the Municipal Charter to change the selection method of the Municipal Clerk. This was my first ever internship that was political science-related.
Major Accomplishment: I produced a research paper titled Appointing or Electing Anchorage's Municipal Clerk that discussed the implications and nuances of the selection methods of a clerk (or an equivalent) position.
The Senator Ted Stevens Legislative Internship Program enables qualified students from the University of Alaska system to earn college credits while working full-time in the Alaska Legislature. As an intern, I was placed in the office of State Senator Jesse Kiehl. There I staffed Senate Transportation where I attended committee meetings, researched transportation topics and issues, tracked pieces of legislation, and sat in state board meetings.
This legislative internship had a major influence on me as a professional. I continue to apply the lessons I learned from my time in Juneau in all of my work . Senator Kiehl and the legislative staffers in his office were amazing mentors as they taught me the importance of professionalism, effective politics, and communication.
Major Accomplishment: I had the opportunity to carry Senate Joint Resolution 11 "Western AK/Arctic Oil Spill Response" through both chambers of the state legislature by preparing documents, testifying in committee, and communicating with 59 legislative staffers from other offices.
As an Assembly Aide for Assembly Member Anna Brawley, I work on policy projects, research a variety of local issues, and maintain constituent communications. This has been a great opportunity as it allows me to apply the skills I learned from Juneau to the city of Anchorage and its residents.
Major Accomplishment: Published 6 monthly electronic newsletters for 400 contacts with an average 70% open rate by editing content and collaborating with the assembly member.
As a College Intern for the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Division of Spill Prevention and Response, I mainly assist with program operations. That includes database management and improvement, logistical support, and project assistance. Much of my experiences before this internship were in a legislative context, but with the State of Alaska, I now get to work in a government context.
Major Accomplishment: I implemented 5700 titles for substance spills across Alaska by entering the primary responsible party, location, amount spilled, and the name of the substance.
