I'll Do It Myself

The Stories Behind the Unassisted Triple Plays

My Project

A lifelong baseball fan, I've always had a special interest in defense. In addition, I'm fascinated by the unusual. The combination of these has driven my interest in unassisted triple plays. Most of these plays are similar. There are runners on first and second who are running on the pitch; the batter hits a line drive to a middle infielder who catches it, steps on second base, and tags the runner from first. What has led me to enjoy this research aren't the plays themselves, which last a few seconds and are somewhat repetitive (almost routine, if you can call rare events routine), it's the stories behind the plays that have caught my attention. It's the oddities, circumstances, and relationships that I've uncovered that's driven the research.

There have been sixteen unassisted triple plays in the history of major league baseball. This includes the controversial Paul Hines triple play, which through the years has given rise to discussion on whether it was really unassisted or not. While not recognized by Major League Baseball as unassisted, I've included it here backed by the research and opinion of MLB historian, John Thorn. Each of the sixteen has its own story. What you will find on this website are links to those sixteen stories as well as some analysis and anecdotes in the unassisted triple plays.
