The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Artifact #1: Curriculum Project
Rationale for Artifact #1:
Description: This artifact was my summative project for my curriculum class during my time at Trinity Christian College. The goal of this project was to develop a fully completed curriculum including details of the layout of the curriculum as well as details reasoning explaining rationale of selection of materials.
Connection: This artifact aligns with ITPS knowledge indicator 5B which states: "The competent teacher understands principles and techniques, along with advantages and limitations, associated with a wide range of evidence-based instructional practices". This project challenged our class to put together rational materials and structure a curriculum that followed evidence-based practices.
Importance: This artifact challenged me to think about long term planning instructions and see the bigger picture when it comes to building a curriculum. This curriculum assisted in growing my knowledge of building lessons and units on top of one another as well as all the necessary details that need to be included in curriculum construction. This project overall assisted me in building evidence-based practices when it came to lesson planning and continent.
Rationale for Artifact #2:
Description: This artifact was an activity I implemented in my time at Jackson. The goal of this activity was for students to work on their problem-solving skills while working collaboratively. I split the class into 3 different teams and each team was given certain materials to try and work together to cross the gym without touching the ground. This activity was done on to different levels through two different class periods.
Connection: This artifact aligns with ITPS performance indicator 5L which states: "The competent teacher develops a variety of clear, accurate presentations and representations of concepts, using alternative explanations to assist students’ understanding and presenting diverse perspectives to encourage critical and creative thinking". This activity set students up to analyze the problem and collaboratively work with other classmates to find an efficient solution.
Importance: This activity not only set students up to create solutions together, but it also challenged groups to come up with different solutions. During this week I saw different classes come up with several different solutions to the same problem. This helped me emphasize that even though everyone was given the same problem, there could be multiple solutions. This activity also helped students listen to the input of their classmates and compromise on trying different ideas.
