Notebook editor. September 2026. This page is the method behind the cricket note and the greyhound note. It is long because a short method page becomes a slogan, and the slogan is what usually replaces the source. No office is claimed. No public email is printed, on purpose. The editor reads public records and writes down where a fluent sentence stops being one.
An observation here is a sentence you can point at a document, a dated quotation, or a replay that still shows the thing named. "The deck has gone too far" is Ricky Ponting's sentence, on Channel Seven, during the Mackay Test, carried by cricket.com.au on 25 August 2026. It is kept as his. It is not upgraded into a measurement of grass. "73 of 78" is Sal Perna's landing as reported by InDaily on 23 September 2026. It is not a claim that the five missing items do not matter. Elle Trahair's objection is kept beside Brenton Scott's welcome. Cutting either one to make a cleaner page would be the edit this notebook exists to refuse.
A sentence that cannot be pointed at is marked as a reading, or it is cut. "Australian pitches favour bowlers" cannot be pointed at. Ponting's sentence can. Roach's mantra sentence can. The gap between them can. The gap is the finding.
Most of the damage in a sports notebook is a date sliding. Three documents govern the two sports on this site, and they do not govern each other.
The first is Cricket Australia's Shield note of 25 August 2026. It sets session times for 2026–27, records Roach on the toss count of 22 teams out of 31 bowling first on day one last season, and records the shift in curator language from "lean towards the bowler" to "lean towards the batter". It extends the injury-substitution trial. It leaves bonus points alone. It does not adopt the ICC's 1 October Test clauses.
The second is the ICC note of 1 October 2026. It binds international series that start on or after that day. The ICC's own example is the Australia–South Africa World Test Championship series. It does not bind a Shield match. Ganguly's quotation describes the committee's care. It does not describe a pitch at Mackay.
The third is the South Australian reform announcement of 23 September 2026. It is a state decision about a state industry, reported by InDaily, with the inspector, the minister, the chief executive and two opponents in the same piece. It does not describe NSW, where GWIC already administers the rules. It does not describe Britain, where GBGB Rule 64 and Rule 109 are a different tree. A paragraph that cites all three documents for one claim has almost always collapsed them.
The working rule is to write the date before the verb. "On 25 August 2026 Roach said" survives a later season. "CA has changed pitches" does not, because he said CA does not employ the curators, and because the season the language was aimed at had not been played.
A Shield session time copied from a Test day. Roach's grid is public. Morning 2 hours, lunch 40 minutes, afternoon 2 hours 15, tea 20 minutes, evening 1 hour 45, plus 30 minutes to finish 96 overs. Using the old two-and-a-half-hour evening after 25 August 2026 mis-locates the middle session, which was the point of the change. The mis-location is not a small one. Three or four overs, at just under four minutes an over, were the hours he hoped batters and spinners might use. A viewer who still calls the last session the long one has inverted the tweak.
A Pathway time carried across clubs. Angle Park 515 metres at 30.32 and Mount Gambier 512 metres at 30.34 are GRSA standards, not a conversion table. Angle Park 530 metres at 30.96 and Murray Bridge 530 metres at 30.47 are the same nominal distance and not the same standard. The cricket note's equivalent error is comparing a 2016 Shield innings with a 2026 Shield innings across the 2019 Kookaburra change. ESPNcricinfo put Smith's home average at 77.25 before that change and 45.53 after, and also recorded the away average falling from 57.10 to 45.11. The pair blocks the simple story and the denial of a local change. Both blocks stay.
A stewards' injury count turned into a national weekly figure. InDaily reported SA stewards' figures of 1,064 greyhounds injured last year, 316 major, five deaths. Coalition summaries use other windows, including NSW counts. They are not averaged here. The refusal is the method. A round national number is easier to remember and harder to source. Selwood's "more than 11,000" petition signatures stay attached to the petition. Scott's 1,190 participants and 927 full-time equivalent jobs stay attached to him. Trahair's "hundreds" in kennels stay attached to her. Mixing them into one ledger is how a notebook starts doing arithmetic it was not given.
A box described as a rating. NSW rules define the box draw as a random allocation. Random is not equal once the bend starts, and a scratch after the draw changes the field that the time describes. Jacket colour in a photograph is the box. The Towcester photograph used on the greyhound page is marked as an illustration for that reason. It is not a meeting this notebook calls.
An ICC clause imported into a domestic day because the calendar overlaps. Five penalty runs for a third time-wasting offence, a pink ball only by prior agreement, a last-over wicket that does not end the day: Test clauses, for series starting on or after 1 October 2026. The Shield substitute window — until stumps on day two, first used for Sean Abbott's split webbing at Junction Oval, match referee Bob Parry — is a different rule, domestic, already in trial. Calling Abbott's replacement a concussion sub, or calling it the new ICC rule, fails both documents.
"All recommendations" against "73 of 78". Scott said GRSA had acted on all Ashton recommendations. Perna's reported count was 73 completed, with standalone rehoming kennels and a breeding cap among those not done. Both sentences can be printed. A page that prints only one has chosen a side and called it a summary.
The cricket page walks a hypothetical November Shield day because an unfinished real match should not be used as a prop. The method of that walk-through is the method. Toss, then the 22 of 31 as context rather than destiny. Clock at lunch, plus 2 hours 15, rather than a feeling that the session has been long. Kookaburra era named before any comparison with a pre-2019 innings. ICC clauses refused at the gate unless the match is in a series the October note covers. That is a list of negatives. The negatives are the value. A positive "how to read a pitch from the couch" would invent a skill the camera does not support. Roach cannot order the curator. A viewer cannot see the millimetre.
The greyhound page walks one Angle Park 515 with an empty box. Pathway standard stated. Empty box stated. Weighted point score's lack of an age or track filter stated. Addressee of the stewards' report stated as GRSA until the new body exists. British handicap refused. Cup conditions refused unless it is that cup. Again the value is the list of things the winning time is not. A generic explainer ends at the lure. This one ends at the tab you still have to open: the order-of-choice report for that meeting, on GRSA's site, which is per meeting and not a national class.
A quotation is kept long enough to include the limit the speaker put on it. Roach's lean-towards-the-batter line is incomplete without "if in doubt" and without his statement that grounds should stay different and that fast bowlers should still have their turn. Ponting's line is incomplete without the illustration of averages moving from 38 to 50, which is his illustration, not a table. Ganguly is incomplete if he is made to comment on Australian wickets. He commented on playing conditions, ball provisions, fielding clarity and pace of the game. Perna is incomplete if "satisfied" is printed without the binary he said he was chosen to answer, continue or discontinue. Pearce is incomplete if the lack of a legislative date is cut. She said the report had been received that day. Trahair is incomplete if her call to end the industry is softened into a request for better kennels. She asked for an end. Selwood is incomplete if the open parliamentary inquiry is dropped. Scott is incomplete if the jobs figure is printed as an official statistic rather than his figure to InDaily.
The notebook does not tidy a speaker into a position they did not take. It also does not grant equal evidence to every sentence in a press conference. A minister's hope for a bill next year is not a stewards' count. A campaigner's kennel claim is not a jobs claim. They are printed in the same note because the reader of either camp will otherwise meet only one.
An operator ranking, a promo code, an anonymous account of market movement, a percentage by which a side or a dog was wrong. A promise that careful reading becomes income. A contact form. A company name or ABN that the site does not have. A public email. Those absences are deliberate and are restated on the terms page so they are not read as an oversight.
The site is for adults. Wagering can cause financial and other harm. The method page does not teach control of betting, because that teaching is a different profession and a different risk. Gambling Help Online remains 1800 858 858 and gamblinghelponline.org.au.
A correction is a document, not a tone. If a Pathway standard on GRSA's page changes, the table changes and the date of the check changes. If the SA integrity bill is introduced, the sentence about Pearce's intention is updated, not deleted, so the gap between announcement and statute stays visible. If the ICC issues a corrected playing condition, the October clauses move. If a quotation here does not match the recording, the recording wins. The editor's job is the cut, not the defence of the cut.
Opinion is allowed where it is marked. The opinion on this page is that a fluent national sentence is usually the one that has dropped a date, a track, or a speaker's limit. That opinion is testable. The cricket note and the greyhound note are the test. If a paragraph in either can be swapped to the other sport without becoming false, it is too abstract and should be cut.
cricket.com.au, Jack Paynter, 25 August 2026, Shield sessions, Roach, Ponting, the nine-of-30 count, the revenue note on two-day Ashes Tests. ESPNcricinfo, 25 August 2026, Kookaburra, Smith, Mackay grass. ICC, 1 October 2026, playing conditions and Ganguly. InDaily, 23 September 2026, Ashton landing, Perna, Pearce, Scott, Trahair, Selwood. GRSA grading page, Pathway standards and weighted point score. NSW Greyhound Racing Rules, box draw. GBGB Rules of 5 June 2026, Rule 64 and Rule 109. cricket.com.au's report of Sean Abbott as the first Shield injury substitute.
Media on the other pages carry their own captions. A caption that does not say whether a picture is a teaching sketch, an illustration from another meeting, or a document extract has failed this method. The pitch diagram is a sketch. The bend diagram is a sketch with six boxes so it cannot pass as a track plan. The race photograph is someone else's meeting, used only to show jackets and a bend, with the source page named.
Failure one. A note that says the Shield "now bats in the afternoon because CA fixed the pitches". Catch: Roach on 25 August 2026 said the lever was language, that curators are not CA employees, and that the season had not yet supplied the sample. Ponting the same week said wickets had gone too far toward seam. Nine of 30 games in 2025–26 finished inside three days. None of those sentences is "CA fixed the pitches". The rewrite keeps the conflict and drops the verb "fixed".
Failure two. A note that says pink-ball Tests are now available whenever light is poor. Catch: the ICC text of 1 October 2026 requires agreement before the start, locks the agreement for the match, and forbids a switch from red to pink after the start. Bad light on day three is not a new agreement. The rewrite says trial, prior agreement, whole match.
Failure three. A note that says a last-over wicket always ends the day, or never does. Catch: the October change is international, for series that start on or after that date, and only if the over is unfinished and conditions are fit. Shield hours are a different document. The rewrite names the document before the rule.
Failure four. A note that says 30.3 is a strong 515. Catch: 30.32 is Angle Park's Pathway standard for 515. Mount Gambier's 512 is 30.34. Murray Bridge's 530 is 30.47. Angle Park's own 530 is 30.96. "Strong" has no track. The rewrite names the track or it does not use the time.
Failure five. A note that says the industry completed the inquiry. Catch: 73 of 78, five not done, breeding cap and standalone rehoming facilities named by InDaily, Scott's "all" printed beside the 73, Trahair and Selwood in the same day's paper, petition over 11,000, RSPCA SA's May call, a parliamentary inquiry Selwood said was still open. The rewrite is longer. Length is the correction.
Failure six. A note that averages SA's 1,064 injuries with an NSW count and calls the result Australian. Catch: different bodies, different windows, different injury grades. The rewrite cites one window and says the other is a different window.
Failure seven. A note that treats the Abbott substitution as the new ICC concussion rule. Catch: domestic trial, injury or illness, until stumps on day two, first case split webbing, Junction Oval, Bob Parry. ICC update expected in October, not yet the rule that replaced him. The rewrite separates the trial from the international discussion.
These seven are the house list. A new page that commits one of them does not get a softer version. It gets the catch written back in.
The cricket note and the greyhound note are long because the mismatch is detailed. The glossary, when it is published, is short because a long definition starts to counterfeit a rule. Session times are not redefined there. They are pointed back at the cricket note. Pathway times are not retabulated there. They are pointed back at the greyhound note. Legal pages say what the site is not, in the length that job needs, and they do not grow a second sports essay. Uneven length is a defence against the template that swaps "cricket" for "greyhounds" and publishes both.
People-first, in the only sense this method uses the phrase, means a reader who already watches can do something they could not do from the first explainer: refuse a comparison. Refuse a Test session grid on a Shield day. Refuse a Gawler time on an Angle Park standard. Refuse a September minister's intention as if it were already a NSW-style commission. That refusal is the use. It is not a service in the sense of a booking or a product, and the terms page says so without apology.
The notebook does not invent a club day or a track visit to satisfy a demand for first-person colour. The experience it claims is the experience of reading the documents against the broadcast habit. Where a person is quoted, the person is named and dated. Where a number is used, the publisher of the number is named. A future editor who adds a paddock visit will have to say which track, which day, and what was not seen. Until that exists, the pages stay with the public record. That is a smaller authority than a steward's, and it is the one that can be checked.
Ganguly's two sentences are kept together. The first lists balls, fielding and pace of the game. The second says the changes were considered so that playing conditions reflect the modern game while keeping integrity and consistency. Dropping the second sentence makes him sound like a reformer of entertainment. Dropping the first makes him sound like a mystic of integrity. The pair is the quotation. Roach is cut the same way. "Lean towards the batter" is not published without "if in doubt", without the decade-old mantra it answers, and without the admission that pitches sit at arm's length. A social clip of the four words is the failure mode of this page.
Perna's "satisfied" is cut with the sentence about millions spent and the sentence about the binary choice. Satisfaction without the binary reads as a compliment to GRSA. The binary without the satisfaction reads as a threat that was not what he said he had decided. Pearce's "good policy" line, about neither side being thrilled, is an opinion about compromise. It is not evidence that Trahair's surplus claim is matched, kilogram for kilogram, by Scott's jobs claim. The method prints the opinion and does not let it adjudicate the evidence.
Every content page ends with the sources that can falsify it, a media caption rule, and the line that the page is not a tip. The sources are URLs in ordinary language, not a dump of keywords. If a link dies, the title, the outlet and the date are enough to find the piece. The caption rule is part of the method because an uncaptioned race photo becomes, in a week, "our meeting". It was not. The eighteen-plus line is part of the method because the subject sits next to wagering even when the sentence is about a session clock. Naming the help line is not an offer of counselling. It is a refusal to pretend the adjacent harm does not exist.
A page that cannot pass those three endings is not finished, however long it is. Length was set so the catches could be written out. Length is not itself the standard. The standard is that a fluent sentence still has its date, its speaker and its limit when it reaches the last line.
