Speechy

Speechy is a text to speech application for listening any book or text you have in your device, or even web pages.

With Speechy you can listen to books while doing some other activities, like excercising yourself.

Speechy has controls for rewind and forward between pages.

You can use the media player notification to easily control the reading.

You can also export entire books to mp4 audio for listening in your favourite music player.

Permissions

Once the app is opened for the fist time, it will ask for a permission to open documents in the device; this is gonna be used to access the PDF, ePUB, text and any data that needs to be read inside the app. This is also needed for storing the logs of the application. No other data is gonna be accessed and there won't be any security issues when granting this permission to the app.

Speechy Controls

Main menu

At the top left of the application we have the menu icon; you can use this to open documents from the device, open a web page or creating a new blank document. You can also access the "last opened files" history.

Settings

At the top right, you can access different settings for the application.

Languages List

At the bottom left we have the languages list; you can choose one of the languages already installed in your device for reading documents. If no languages are found, then a dialog for configuring the text to speech capabilities in your device. If you open a book written in English you need to choose English from the list; if you open a book written in Spanish, you need to choose Spanish from the list, and so on.

Reading Controls

The next 4 buttons (Read, Replay, Prev and Next) are for controlling the reading.

  • Read: for starting reading from the current document page (when reading, a Pause button will be shown for pausing the reading). If the reading stops in the middle of the page, this Read button can be used to start reading again from the current position (it remembers the last reading position).
  • Replay: for forcing reading again from the beginning of the page.
  • Prev - Next: go to the previous or next paragraph.

Saving to mp4 (creating an audio file)

Use the Save button for generating an output audio file... this file can be user later on to be listened on any music player.

Changing Reading Speed

You change the Reading speed by clicking the + and - buttons; the speed control component shows the current reading speed; any changes made to the reading speed will take effect after reading the current sentence.

Reading Settings

Options for controlling the reading.

  • Configure Text to Speech: you can use this to add new languages and new voices for an specific language (male, female, etc); this will be covered later on.
  • Pause between sentences: you can configure the duration of the pauses between sentences; this way you can achieve a more fluid reading from the app.
  • Auto-continue Reading Next Page: tells Speechy if it has to start reading the next page when finishes the current one.
  • Audio Output Channel: you can configure an output channel different to "Media" so you can use "Media" channel to listen to music and listen to a book at the same time.
  • Audio output directory: The output directory when exporting the book to mp4.


General Settings

Options for configuring general aspects of the app.

  • Recent files history in menu: how many files are kept in the history for easy access through the main Menu. Anytime you open a new document, it is added to the recent history in the first position.
  • Send logs: if an error occurs and the error info needs to be sent to the developer, use this option.
  • Rate this app: use this option for sending any comments to the developer or rate the app in the playstore in case you liked it.

Opening a document

For opening a document from your local device, use the "Listen a document" option. A browsing window will be opened for you to choose the document to be listened. Only PDF, ePUB or text files will be available for choosing. The document will remain in the "last opened documents" historical.

Listening a Web page

If you want to listen to a Web page, use the "Listen web page" option. The google search engine will be opened and then you can search the page to be listened. The page will remain in the "last opened documents" historical.

Write any text and listen to it

If you want to enter text and make Speechy read it, use the "New Text" option in menu. Then enter the text in the white page (or copy it from clipboard)

Open a document from Whatsapp or other apps

Go to Whatsapp or the app in which you have the document and click on it; then choose "Speechy" in the "open with" dialog. The document will be opened inside Speechy. . The document won't be saved in the "last opened documents" historical data when using this option.

Sharing text from other apps

Go to the Web browser or any other app which allows you to select a text and share it; after clicking "share" choose "Speechy" in the "complete action with" dialog. The text will be copied to Speechy and you could start listening to it.

Open an specific Web page

Go to the Web browser and click the Web page url, then click the "share" option and choose "Speechy" in the "complete action with" dialog. The page will be opened in Speechy and you could start listening to it.
