Haircutting/Hifi Ulu

It is quite common for a Niuean boy to grow his hair long. 

A haircutting or 'hifi ulu' is a rite-of-passage ceremony. This is a celebration for a male child. The boy has his hair cut for the first time. When it is cut, the family of the boy receives money from their guests for a piece of hair. In Niue, guests might receive gifts of food such as taro, bananas, fish and coconuts in return.
