Many women in Niue are highly skilled at weaving. Some of the most popular items that are woven include hats (pulou), fans (ili ili), baskets (kato) and mats (potu).
Some of the traditional materials used to weave include: laufa (pandanus leaves), ka niu (coconut leaf mid-ribs), launiu (coconut leaves), and kala fou (fou fibres). They also use the fibres and thin roots of the banyan tree. In New Zealand, Niue weavers use harakeke (New Zealand flax) in place of laufa (pandanus).
