Facts about Niue

Niue is located in the South West Pacific. It's closest neighbours are Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands.

Niue means 'behold, the coconut' (niu-e).

The Niue Flag is yellow with the Union Jack on the upper left corner.  There are 5 yellow stars on the Union Jack. 

Niue is commonly known as 'The Rock' of Polynesia. This is because the island is one of the largest coral atolls in the world. 

Alofi is the capital of Niue. This is where the airport is located. 

The people of Niue are also New Zealand citizens.  

The NZ dollar is the currency used in Niue.  

Less than 2,000 Niue people live in Niue. 

More than 30,000 Niue people live in New Zealand or in other countries. 

Nukututaha is Niue's original name - It means 'an island standing alone'.

Niue is one of the first countries in the world to become a dark sky nation. 

It takes around 3 and a half  hours to fly from Auckland International Airport to Niue.
